    I was wondering.

    n

    1. Is the total number of people holding a CPA license increasing, decreasing or remaining about the same?

    n

    2. Is the number of CPA’s in CPA firms increasing, decreasing or remaining about the same?

I don't remember where I read this statistic, I think it was either the Colorado CPA society magazine or the AICPA society magazine. The article said 50% of all CPAs are baby boomers and the first 25% of those are retiring this year. That is a LOT of the current work force!n

The accounting profession right now is “old”. The Journal of Accountancy had addressed this maybe a year ago. As noted, within the next 5-10 years, approximately half of all licensed CPA's plan to retire, meaning this is a GREAT time to be licensed.

Expect the general landscape to change with more mid-sized and small firms, as big firms tend to be “relatively” young.

I worked for a small firm (and now a big firm) and could have been partner after obtaining the CPA, and probably have the entire firm to myself within 5 years… But I didn't see much growth potential there, so I took a different course… but it depends on the route you want to go! :)n

    REG - 97
    BEC - 82
    FAR - 86
    AUD - 96 ... DONE!

Short-term, a harder exam means more people may need to re-take sections, which means more money-making test fees.n
