I just passed my last exam, and with much luck, I also just found a job. The job will be mainly being a tax preparer. After receiving my offer, my employer told me to go to this site (https://www.irs.gov/taxpros/article/0,,id=221009,00.html) to get my PTIN. And with further browsing, I notice phase 2 which states that we preparer will need to pass a proficiency exam!! Just when I thought I would never see another exam again, another one is waiting around the corner. Anyways, does anybody know any further details regarding this test? I mean I really hope that this exam isn’t a modified regulation ver 2.0 or something. =(n

Sorry, I missed the exception!! That is “…being a CPA!”. But then, another question arises. Since I don't have my 2 years experience for my CPA, would I have to take it so I can work through the experience?n

In IL we don't have to have experience to be a CPA. I don't think the exam is anything as scarey as REG. I did hear about this when I was interviewing with local CPA firms for a part time tax preparer position. They were thinking that they were going to recieve more clients this year because of this new requirement. Now, not just anyone can file your taxes!n

I got a letter last week from the IRS in regards to my PTIN, saying I cannot file anyone's taxes for pay until I renew my PTIN, In order to renew my PTIN I had to comply with test or be a CPA, or an EA, etc.and pay $65. I don't think because the test won't be ready, doesn't mean you don't have to comply.n

Hmm..after a more thorough reading, it seems like you can waiver the test until the end of 2013 IF you applied for the PTIN prior to the test being ready. This means I will satisfy the experience requirement before then? =P My local firm will offer a tax seminar prior to starting, which I am pretty certain that this new regulation will be cover. Until then, got to get my PTIN asap! lol.n
