MA Licensing question

I am currently applying for MA non-reporting license, which requires an employment letter. The application form only stresses what the content should be but it is silence regarding the type of employer. I am currently a student in my second masters degree and only working part-time as a student assistant at school. Meanwhile, I did interned full time as accounting/tax intern before. Will I be able to use the employment letter written by my previous employer? Or does it require the employment letter only come from the current employer?

I emailed and called nasba and they said they are not sure…Someone please help me out here please.

    Thanks in advance!

I guess people just don't come back so often after they're done with the exam. Good luck on it!

This passage from the application leads me to believe that you can use a previous employer:

    Experience/Employment Letters:

Letter describing the applicant’s experience m

    ust

    be

    currently dated

    (within 1 year)

    ,

    ad

    dressed to the

    MA

    Board

    ,

    on

    CPA

firm or company letterhead from each public accounting firm or government/non

    public

employer in which the experience was obtained, describing the type, exact dates of experience and if full

    or part

    time

    . Letter must be

    att

    ested to,

under the pains and penalties of perjury by the CPA

    e

    mployer

    ,

    partner

    /shareholder

of such public accounting firm, government supervisor or CPA supervisor of non

    public

    e

    mploy

    er

    .

    Letter

    and signature

    must

    be original

    s and

    must be

    included

    with

    th

    e

    application

    .

I tried to call but could not get a hold of anyone either =( However, I am fairly certain that previous experience counts as long as the letter from that employer is dated current and complies with the above (sorry it pasted all weird!).

You said you're going for Non-Reporting License, so I'm assuming you have a graduate/masters degree to show?

You don't have to provide employment or experience letter if you can show that you have a graduate degree.

Do not confuse this with the 3 reference letters, those are required regardless.

Read number 4 of this attachment….https://www.mass.gov/ocabr/docs/dpl/boards/pa/apnonrep.pdf

If you have an undergrad and 150 credit hrs, that's where you will be required to attach an employment letter

@MaLoTu Did you judge that by the past tense they use? And this doe indicate that my supervisor has to be a CPA right?

@stoleway Yeah, when I read it, I don't think I need any work experience to apply for it. But number 6 seems to requires the employment letter. Although it does provide the option of “N/A”, I think I would have a better chance if I have one. So seriously, I do not understand the purpose of this letter. And there is no much difference between the employment letter and reference letter, is there?

Note that this form is for both undergrad and grads who qualifies for the non-reporting license. Some part of the form applies to only undergrads or both. When I did mine, I ticked NO because I have a masters degree on file, and I didn't have any problem with it.

There is a difference between reference letters and employment letters. Reference letters confirms your relationship with the referee, the referee also attests to your moral character under the penalties of pains and perjury. Good luck!

I gathered my interpretation partially on the tense, but also on the fact that it required the employer to state the dates you had been employed.

Since stoleway has a MA license I think you should should follow their advice.

@stoleway So you did not hand in your employment letter at all? Do you have your employers to write you the reference letter or did you write it and let them sign it? Do you still have the ones that you used?

@MaLoTu Thanks a lot! That helps!

@joyflying.So you did not hand in your employment letter at all?.

Nope, I did not even bother about it since it wasn't required of me.

Do you have your employers to write you the reference letter or did you write it and let them sign it?

I wrote the content myself and gave them to the referees (1 was my manager and 2 colleagues I've worked with in the past) for review, they signed and notarized and then ask me to pick it up

    Sample….

I have known………………for ………….. years. I believe I am in a perfect position to evaluate the applicants character, and with those in mind, I can easily recommend him for a CPA License.

I certify that I have been professionally acquainted with the above-named applicant, and I believe him/her to be of good moral character, and I hereby recommend him/her to the Massachusetts Board of Public Accountants as entirely worthy to be granted a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant

I certify under the pains and penalty of perjury; that these statements are true and I understand that false or misleading statements may result in the denial, suspension or revocation of any CPA Certificate or License issued to applicant.

@stoleway Ah that really helps! Is okay that I use all three of them in the same format? And you checked N/A for employment letter on the application form?

I used this template as a standard one for all 3 references

I also checked N/A for the employment letters. Good luck and wish you well:)
