Licensing Question

    Hello all!

I’ll try to make this quick. I just passed the CPA exam (woot!) and now I’m working on getting licensed. I’ve been working in the business sector doing internal audit for 2 years now, so I should qualify for GA CPA license. However, the only person on my team in America has a CPA license based in another state (IL). Can he sign off on me? If not, can a Chartered Accountant sign off for me (he’s based in London)?

Bonus Question: I know the CPA licensing requirements used to be 2 year in public and 5 years in business sector, but from what I’ve read it seems that they have changed it to 1 year in either public or business sector. Here is the website that shows this: https://www.accountingedu.org/georgia-cpa.html Can anyone verify if this is accurate?

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!!

IL CPA should be fine. Chartered Accountant not. I know half the states require one year and no public accounting experience, so just check the fine print of GA to see if it is one of those states.

The IL CPA can sign off.

The info below regarding work experience is from – GA board's website under FAQ – https://sos.ga.gov/index.php/licensing/plb/1/faq

What are the work experience requirements for licensure?

One year and 2,000 hours in public accounting; one year and 2,000 hours in business, industry, government or college teaching (teaching at a 4 year college or university in at least two different areas of accounting above the introductory or elementary level) or a combination of work experience in public accounting, business, industry, government or college teaching. Complete requirements are contained in the board’s rules at this website. See O.C.G.A. 43-3-6 and rule 20-3-.08. All work experience must have been supervised by a person who holds a live permit as a certified public accountant except for government or college teaching. In these two areas you must be supervised, however, the supervisor is not required to hold a CPA.

The experience must have been earned no earlier than one-year prior to application; the experience may have breaks in service of no longer than 1-year in duration.
