    Experience requirements:
1 year of employment for one or more employers as an employee of a CPA. The experience may be gained through public accounting, industry, government or academia. Prior to July 1, 2015: In lieu of experience you may satisfy the experience requirement with a bachelor’s degree + 30 semester hours of non-duplicative study which includes a total of 45 semester hours in accounting subjects including the 6 auditing hours as outlined above in the education section. Semester hours can be substituted with equivalent quarter hours.

Could someone please help me understand the statement above? I was under the impression that if you have a Masters degree you don’t have to worry about the experience requirement. I am confused by the statement above, specifically the section outlining the requirements Prior to July 1, 2015. What about After July 1, 2015?

Also, what experience counts? Retroactive? After the CPA exam? I have been working for the same Real Estate Investment company, reporting directly to a CPA licensed CFO/Controller, for the past 6 years – would this satisfy the experience requirement if the MBA no longer does?

Obviously, I could call the board and find out but I was hoping someone already has the answer. 🙂

Mine still says N/A as well. I submitted mine on May 5th and I got the letter it was going to the board on May 15th so it looks like I missed the May meeting too!

I submitted everything to NASBA on 3/15. It took 7 weeks for the initial evaluation, and then another week for quality control. So, I missed the May 10th meeting. NASBA said my application will be at the June 28th board meeting. So, almost 4 months to get my license. @Vanche you're lucky, from what I've heard, 10 days for the process is really fast. Or maybe NASBA is catching up after the huge inflow of applications.

    5/10 submitted application to nasba

5/17 NASBA confirmed receipt of transcripts

    5/24 Passed initial processing.

    TBA Awaiting QA Review

I'd really like to know result of QA review so that I can resubmit any necessary documents at least 10 days before the June 28 board meeting.

From what I gather, if NASBA approves your application, you get on a list of folks that the Board approves by acclamation. If the Board has to discuss your app individually, then there may be a specific issue that they need to discuss before approval.

In other words, if NASBA already approved you then you should be in good shape. The Board is unlikely to disagree

Ugh. Got an email this morning that said I was still in QA review and it would be the end of the week.

whoa, @mecrushya so none of my hours count BEFORE I submit my application??

“your 1800 hours of work experience must be acquired within the 5 years immediately preceding your application for licensure.”

    @MommyCPA

If you applied on 6/6/2017, then all of your 1800 hours would have had to be earned no earlier than 6/6/2012.

Hi guys, how is the job market in Denver right now? I am trying to relocate to Denver but find out that there are not many public accounting jobs in Denver in Indeed.

Well, the economy is thriving here, so you would think that jobs are easy to come by. However, it's really competitive here since Denver is such a great place to live. A lot of people are vying for those jobs. Still, there are jobs out there. I would subscribe to Lew's List. Lew sends out accounting postings by email a few times a week. On another note. NASBA/DORA approved my experience but are saying that I need 3 more classes: ethics, auditing, and communications. This is frustrating since I have classmates with the same classes as I do that sailed through approval. Oh well, if it wasn't difficult it wouldn't be as worth it. I sent them course syllabi and descriptions, and hopefully they get approved.

Do you guys know how long you have after passing the CPA exam to apply for license? Assuming you passed all 4 parts, does that ever expire under Colorado?

    UPDATE!!!!

    Well,
I had to take the ethics course and the auditing class online. I then actually went to the DORA board meeting today to argue why my business communications class should be good enough licensure.

They unanimously approved my application after several questions about that communications class. Yeah! I felt like I needed a cigarette after that experience, and I don't smoke. I guess I can call myself a CPA now (I WAS at the board meeting…the chair offered me congratulations), but I will wait until the license number and info hit DORA and/or NASBA.

I will give the board a lot of credit, though. They painstakingly go through every single application and make sure every requirement for licensure is fulfilled. When they have a question about a requirement (Experience or education), they make a sound judgment based on common sense. They are not completely rigid in their decisions.
