I have a question about license. What happens if I pass the exam but never apply for license? Do my exam credits expire? Or I can practice as an “Inactive” CPA?

Your exam scores are good for 18 months after you pass the first one. After that, they expire (on a rolling basis) and you will have to retake the sections that have expired. For what it's worth, if you put the work in to pass all four parts, you may as well get the license.

    A - 8/30/2012 (68), 10/4/2012 (78)
    R - 11/21/2012 (84)
    B - 01/05/2013 (85)

It varies state by state but as long as you pass all 4 in the 18 month window they do not automatically expire in 18 months, that is not correct. You cannot call yourself a CPA without a license ever.

My apologies, Mia is correct. The coffee hadn't kicked in yet when I posted.

Thanks for help guys. So what you saying is as long as I pass 4 sections in 18 months, my credits wont expire anymore and they will always have my scores on file, the thing is just I never get the actual license if I dont apply. Am I right?

You need to check with your state board to see if passed exams do expire because I believe in some states they do while in other states they are good forever.

Why exactly would someone spend all the time, money and effort to pass the exams and not apply for a license?

Because I dont have working experience, so I'm not sure if I can still apply without experience. I'm afraid that my scores will be expired when I meet the experience requirement… This gets me so worried…

Instead of asking this question to us on the forum, contact your state board right away, they are a phone call away.

We are here to give exam/ test taking tips. This question is best handled by your state board. DO not email them, call them!!!

What state are you sitting for your exams in? In some states you can get what is called a non reporting license without experience. Seriously check these questions with your state board, you have too much at stake to rely on the kindness of strangers–get answers straight from the correct source to avoid misinformation that can cost you.

@ Grace, I live now in MA and I am transferring my grades here. in MA you will be a CPA without working experience as long as:

You passed the exam and you have the 150 hours. Note the following: If you are short in hours like me, you have three years to complete those hours before the CPA exam' scores expires, otherwise you have to take it again.

    Good luck

You can get the license in MA *without* working experience? Are you sure? I am from MA and most of my family is still there – did undergrad at UMass Amherst! But I live in MS now and we have to have the equivalent of 1 year full-time experience working for a CPA within 5 years of passing the exam in order to get the license (in addition to the education requirements, which I not only meet but exceed).

We've tossed around the idea of moving back up North but Hubby has a good academic job down here and it's so much more competitive up there. Also I've really enjoyed the mild winters, and spring in February! Can you tell we're a bit torn? lol… Anyway sorry to threadjack but if I could get my license without the experience it might be worth the move.

In MA to get the license without the experience you must have a graduate level degree, simply having 150 credits will not qualify you. I had to have my masters degree before I could apply even though I had the 150 credits long before that. Also its not a “full” license, you may not sign off on financial reports as an attest function unless you get the full license which does require the experience. However you don't have to disclose the different type of license unless asked to perform an attest function.

What is the mobility (other states) of the non-reporting CPA license in Massachusetts?
