I was excited that I’m about to pass my last exam and I can’t wait to get my license. But, now that I am looking into things, I’m wondering if I can get my license at all yet?

I do not have public accounting work experience. I’ve worked at a private company for the past 5 years and have been working hard to get my CPA license.

So once I pass my last test in August…… will I even be able to get a license? Will I have to take the exams all over again since I don’t have the work experience? I’ve been trying to read the Kansas websites but it’s not very helpful so far. If anyone can give me some insight I would be so appreciative of your help. Thank you

I also wanted to ask. Once I start applying for jobs, am I going to be hurt by the fact that I don't have any public experience? I'm starting to feel really dismayed. I wanted to keep working at this company while studying so that I could focus my full efforts on passing the exam. But maybe I should have been working somewhere else.

From the FAQs: 11. I passed the exam– can I call myself a CPA?
Once you have passed the CPA exam, you are required to pass the AICPA™s Professional Ethics course. Once a candidate has successfully completed the ethics course and has been issued a Kansas CPA certificate, a person may use the CPA as a credential only. (In other words, CPA may appear after a person™s name if they are working in an industry that is not related to the practice of public accountancy.) CAUTION: Financial Planning, litigation support, broker/dealer services, investment advisory, consulting, management advisory and business valuation services, ALL fall under the definition of non-attest practice, and in order to use the CPA designation in connection with these services, a person must also hold a valid Kansas permit to practice. The CPA Certificate allows a person to use the designation as a credential, not hold out or sign reports for the public as a CPA. If a person wants to reflect this information on a resume, then we strongly suggest that the CPA designation is explained by saying, “not licensed to practice in Kansas”. For the definition of practice of certified public accountancy, please go to http://www.ksboa.org/statutes/1_321.pdf The definition is broken out into two categories: attest and non-attest.

You will have to find the experience requirements for a full license.

Thanks so much for taking your time to find that info Monikernc! That's about all the info I could find as well. By the sounds of it, I won't have to retake any exams, so that's a huge relief. I'll be excited to start a new career and dig in on this work experience requirement.

You have the rules and regs posted by the Kansas board. KS is a two tier state.

It sounds like if you are doing accounting work and can get a licensed CPA to sign off on it for the number of hours required by Kansas you can apply for a permit.
