They assume it’s nerdy excel spreadsheets that relate strictly to numbers and tax issues that have no relation to the business world. The owner of my small company has no idea that I have been studying a vast array of topics relating to every aspect of managing and running a business. For instance, I remembered the “Grandfather, Father, Son” rule of backing up data and randomly mentioned it in a meeting involving IT people and their mouths hit the floor. They were shocked that the Controller knew anything about IT functions. I was pretty annoyed.

I just feel like the CPA prepares you to run not only be a great accountant, but also gives you the necessary knowledge to run a business successfully. Unfortunately for me, the owner doesn’t realize this and pigeon holes me into only an accountant. Oh well…life goes on.

I'd rather be underestimated than overestimated. I'm only 22 so I haven't had many professional problems with this but it does bother me a bit that no one seems to have any idea how hard the CPA exam is. Then again I didn't know much at all about it until a few years ago…

Controllers have managerial functions as well. So, you're not only an accountant. Or maybe your boss doesn't know that either…

@75 – Lucky for me I do have a management role and am not defined specifically accounting, but I'm also not included in many other topics/initiatives outside finance/accounting. I do wear a lot of “hats” since we're a small company.
