Hi, this is my first time posting on the website, yet I have been a long time follower. I just recently passed all four sections of the exam. I live in California and can really use someone’s advice regarding work experience requirements. For the last four years, I have worked at a small private company as an Controller directly reporting to the owner of the company. During my four years at this company, I have worked extensively with our outside public accounting firm working with them on various things such as 1) preparing financials for the company’s tax returns, 2) monthly sales tax returns, 3) general tax planning, and 4) working with their auditors during company audits. I only time I have directly worked under the supervision of an actively licensed CPA was about 15 years ago after college when I performed tax work at Coopers and Lybrand for a few years. My question is this: Does anyone know if the California Board of Accountancy would allow my hours to be signed-off by an actively licensed CPA who I work extensively with at our outside public accounting firm? In other words, do I need someone who is directly supervising me to sign-off on my hours or can someone at an outside accounting firm sign-off? If anyone could provide me with some insight, I would really appreciate it.
