After 13 months of gruelling study and 2 months of waiting for my application to be processed, I can finally call myself a CPA. For all of you who want to give up, don’t. It is a marathon so you need to focus your efforts, set up reasonable goals, and then stick with the plan until you pass. It is worth it. A couple of tips that helped me pass were:
1. Go through the material thoroughly and then take the simulated CPA exams. Focus on all areas you are weak in.
2. When you take the exam, keep your hand off of the mouse. Read the question thoroughly and then identify the right answer. If my hand was on the mouse while I read the question, I had a tendency to pick a “mostly correct” answer, but not “always the correct” answer. Keeping my hands in my lap removed the temptation for me to rush through.
3. Bring a small snack like a coffee/tea and granola bar and eat it in between testlets. My testing center had a small snack table in the lobby to set this on as you are not allowed to access the locker/notes during testing. My brain gets tired and when I pause, get a bit of caffeine, and a jolt of food, I get my game brain back on track.
4. If you fail a test, don’t lament for longer than a day. You didn’t study enough, now go back and learn the material and take it again.
5. Celebrate after every test you take. You worked hard and you deserve a little down time.
