How to show the boss my appreciation for the experience?

It’s been a while since I’ve been on here but I still check in from time to time. Good luck everyone with studying!! It will soon be a distant memory and you WILL get your life back.

I did things backwards from most people: I passed the exam and then had to find a CPA to hire me for 2,000 hours of experience. Only 17 hours to go!!!

Question: what is an appropriate way to show my gratitude to the woman that went out on a limb and hired me? She knew all along I wasn’t going to stay with her. I am going to write her a nice thank you letter, but should I get her a gift or something?? Has anyone ever done this?

I would think that a small gift/token of appreciation would be nice – whether it's a gift certificate so that she can go to dinner with her family and relax for a bit, or something somewhat personalized but not too much (like my former boss loved Duck Dynasty, so something from that show could have been appropriate – something “personalized” in that I knew he liked it specifically [rather than just a generic boss-gift], but not too personal). I don't think it's a “should”, just a “could”. Another thing that might be highly appreciated is an offer that she can call on you if she needs help in the future. For example, if she's a tax accountant and you're switching to private, you could offer that during tax season, if she needs a hand, you'd be happy to come in some Saturdays or something and help her out. Not suggesting you work for free…but having extra help that can be called on in a pinch could be a very good thing for her!

@Allyson, Just wanted to say that I'm glad I'm not the only one who is doing this “backwards” – I'm tackling the exams and then will get the experience requirements. Congratulations on achieving both!

And I agree with @Lilla, something personalized but not too personal will be appreciated.

Someone at work knows I like snow globes; she found a really cool snow globe in a cup, that you can drink out of and bought it for me. I've never seen anything like it and was so excited. She downplayed it because it's plastic and cost less than $5, but it means a lot to me.

Thanks for the ideas. She's asked me to come back and help her, which I'm planning to do.

I'm tossing around the idea of a restaurant gift card, personalized notecards/pad or a holiday floral arrangement for the office.

@Liss, it has been harder than I thought to get the experience; time seems to stand still when I want those “CPA” letters right now. The experience has been wonderful though. She's taught me so much about things I would have never had experience with. We have developed a good relationship that we will both continue to benefit from.

    Hang in there!

Another “backwards” future CPA here, nice to know others are/were also venturing the same path.

Don't forget about Etsy, you can get lots of personalized and/or handmade gifts there. Or consider giving her the gift of an experience, e.g. if she's into wine maybe there are vineyard tours in your area, or if she's a theater buff you can get her tickets to a play, etc.

It sounds like you have developed a nice professional and personal friendship with this lady; I'm sure whatever it is you end up giving her will mean a lot and greatly appreciated.

Etsy is a great suggestion for personalized stationary! Here is a link to one of my favorite Etsy vendors:

    https://www.etsy.com/shop/letterlovedesigns

The stationary and notepads are gorgeous and completely customizable. A pal of mine uses them for corporate gifts around the holidays and they are always well received.

@Allyson that is very kind of you to want to do something nice for her, I'm sure she will appreciate anything you decide to do! πŸ™‚
