I took the ethics exam the first time and I got an 86 %

On my second attempt im doing the following

Referencing where I got my answer

Checking my answers. Flagging questions from confident to check again..

Keeping an eye out for California questions

Any other advice that I may be missing? I was close last time but some of the questions are so tricky. Many are straight forward but many are not. I hope I pass this time :/ any advice or encouragement would be appreciated.

If you failed the first time what was the key to getting above a 90 the second time or any attempt after?

I got an 86 or 88 the first time I took it as well, then a 92/94 the second time. The difference between missing 5 questions and 7 can definitely seem unlucky.

– The questions that explicitly mention California are the only ones using CA rules. If it doesn't mention CA, then only look at the regular rules.
– For unique sounding 2-3 word phrases in the questions, do a CTRL-F for that same phrase PDF document. It's almost scary how easily that works for at least 50% of the questions. The correct answer to a question is likely within a page of that block of text that you correctly CTRL-F to. From my experience, you shouldn't have to find the correct answer across multiple page to answer a single question.
– Use (you'll be sick of this by the time you're done with this exam) professional skepticism with every multiple choice answer. Use a very keen process of elimination. For every answer you select, make sure you know why the other answers you didn't select are definitely wrong.
– Take your time. You're not on a timer, and can take weeks or months if you wanted to. The system saves your answers. I know a few people that only worked on 1-3 questions a day.

Yes the control f function is definetely a lifesaver! Thank you i especially love your third tip on knowing why the others are wrong. I am planning to split the questions over two weekends..I'm halfway through so far. However, I will be checking my answers three or five at a time per day the following week.

Yeah, definitely. It's not a “pick the right answer” test. If you approach it with the mindset of “don't pick the 3 wrong answers”, you'll do fine!

My state doesn't require an ethics exam, I was always curiours what types of questions do they ask.

Can't be too specific due to disclosure rules. But basically covers what you'd expect from an accounting ethics class. Issues you'd encounter in professional practice like independence, objectivity, integrity, etc.
