    Hi everyone,

I live in the state of Florida and the requirement here is to be a CPA you have to complete 36 accounting credit hours. I received my bachelor’s in accounting a few years ago and that required only 24 credit hours. I have looked at some online schools to see what options they have but most of them have only one or two more classes, which would still not be enough to get me to 36 credit hours. Have most of you that are CPA’s or have completed your educational requirements done a masters in accounting or is there some alternative to getting the necessary amount of accounting credits? Thank you

My undergraduate degree had 27 accounting hours. Also, it had 3 hours of business law, which counts towards the 36 accounting hours for South Carolina and some other states. Additionally, the university I attended offered Managerial Accounting, which is 3 hours. That class is not part of the B.S. accounting degree, but I took that class nonetheless for the accounting hours. That that gave me a total of 33. I then just took a graduate accounting class and that is how I currently got to 36.

Have you checked with the state board? Often times a university's accounting program is considered “qualified”. Of course i'm saying this with absolutely no experience with Florida.

Most folks will work on a masters if they still need credits, fortunately for me all I needed were generic credits to hit 150 total credits, I took Spanish 101-103, Technical Writing, and World Music!

    REG- (1) 76
    FAR- (2) 64, (5)74, (7)83 (Over achiever!)
    AUD- (3) 70, (4) 75
    BEC- (6) 75

I have a business degree and got the accounting classes to make me eligble to sit for the CPA at UNF. I have to take 4 more upper level accounting classes to be licensed after I pass the exam and I'll either go back to UNF or do the UCLA Extension program depending on what they are offering at the time.

Thank you to all that have replied. Unfortunately in Florida they don't count business law towards the 36 necessary credits, they only count them towards the general business credits which I have plenty with completing my MBA.

CPAMommyof3 does UNF offer their classes online because I definitively would prefer to complete the remaining classes online? Otherwise I will have to look into UC Berkley extension program or CSU global that stoleway mentioned. Thank you

UNF is about as behind as you can get on educational options. They don't have many online classes and the classes they do offer are geared more towards full time students. I don't recommend it at all. Just letting you know where I got my extra credits. I really wanted to take the Controllership class, but it was only offered at 10:50 a.m. and I have to take night classes. Ridiculous! This is why I am also looking into Online programs for my remaining classes. Hopefully I'll be able to find something affordable and convenient. Good luck to you!
