Hi all,

I left my firm in October after one year of starting. I was hired out of college and decided to leave as I wanted to start a business. We had some investors lined up and a pretty solid shot at getting things off the ground. Long story short, the regulatory hurdles were not able to be crossed. When I left the firm I told them why was leaving, gave them three weeks, and left with good reviews and on good terms.

I took a job as an internal auditor while trying to get the new business started as I needed an income. Now that the business doesn’t seem to be working out, I want to go back into big 4 accounting.

Will it be hard to get back to my old offfice/firm If I apply?

Nah, I don't think so. As long as your attitude going in is good and your expectations are realistic, I think the transition back to your old firm will be easy.

I'd recommend reaching out to anyone you know at your old firm. In fact, if for some reason your old firm is unable/unwilling to take you back or you'd rather not reach out to old coworkers, let me know. I'd be willing to take a look at your resume and refer you to an experienced hire recruiter at my Big 4.

Out of curiosity, why the interest in going back? If owning your own business is your ultimate goal, why not go for a job where you will still be challenged and continue to learn, but have the flexibility needed to grow a business on the side when you are ready? I have done big-4, mid-size, and small firm and I have realized small = the greatest flexibility and comfort. I am currently in a small firm and am hoping it's my last job before eventually venturing out on my own.

-Mayo, Thanks for the input, which firm if you don't mind me asking? I would prefer to go back to Deloitte as that is where I started and I am a bit more comfortable with their technology, policies ect. (although the firm to firm differences might be minimal). If you wanted to give me your contact info or want mine I would be happy to send it over. If I go back to big 4 I plan on an August/October time frame.

-Amay, It really isn't that starting my own business is a definite goal. I have a huge opportunity in this company I am trying to start, but it is in the highly regulated insurance industry. Not to go into specifics, but we have a new type of policy that is not yet being sold yet, and we are in the midst of finding a fronting carrier to sell through. (Starting an insurance company from scratch costs millions). With that being said we still are speaking to a few companies trying to iron out a deal with a fronting carrier, we have found a captive cell that would allow us to sell through them as well, so there is still a shot at getting it off the ground. If it doesn't work out my next best option is to go back into Big 4 for some time and I am still willing to take a run at partner, as I believe I have some of the common qualities you tend to see in most partners (I understand this is still an unrealistic expectation, but I would feel better later in life knowing I made the attempt). I also can't stand the Internal Audit position I am in now, and it would really be a waste of my mid 20's to remain here.

Amay-haha your post is spot on. I'm actually just as busy as I was during busy season last winter in that we are understaffed to the max.
