Experience Requirement Question

    Hello All,

I’ve completed the education requirment, and I am about to sit for my 4th exam after already passing the first three this year. I have made my entire career (about 7 years) in commercial banking, which includes analyzing financial statements and financial covenants and advising businesses on financial direction of the companies I work with. North Carolina requires 4 years “in the field of accounting”, not under the direct supervision of a CPA. Would this experience count towards the licensing requiring. I have read the rulebook for the state inside and out, and it does not expand on “4 years on the field of accounting”.

    Thoughts???

Sounds like two different careers and experience to me. A banker does not prepare financials or taxes. Reading financials and preparing them are very different. Both require skills, but a different set in my opinion.

    Reg 11/15/2011 - 80
    Aud 02/28/2012 - 81
    Bec 05/31/2012 - 78
Far 08/31/2012 - 83 Do you believe in Miracles, YES !!!

    CPA License received 10/2012 !!
    CFE License received 04/2013 !!
    EA License received

Thanks for the feedback! I guess I figured because I use so much of the information tested on on the exam in my job role that it would be “experience”. I am daily reconstructing financial statements and building ratio tables to make financial decisions. Also, I am performing audit work by observing inventory, A/R collections, and customer concentrations.

    Any other opinions out there?

    Thanks!

Ultimately I'd ask the State Board, but does NC specifically mention the kinds of experience you could use? For ex. my state lists in the work experience form the different kinds of experience that qualifies, including: audit, attestation, tax, consulting, and assurance… maybe your experience counts as one of those.

@QuasiCPA, I am also in NC and have been curious about the experience requirements…they do seem to be rather vague. Have you found any additional information from the state board?

    BEC - 82
    AUD - 68, 82
    REG - 48, 68, 81
    FAR - 60, 70, 73, 77

If all else fails you can transfer your passing exam scores to a state with lest strict experience requirements. Get yourself licensed in that state, then transfer your license back to North Carolina.
