Expensive License

    I just want to rant about something that everyone knows, such as HOW EXPENSIVE this license is…. And I haven’t even received it yet. After going over my units, I believe that I am short one unit, as such, I have to take an Accounting Ethics course AND an additional accounting course since CA is requiring this additional class (which I still silly to me, as if the ridiculous Ethics exam isn’t enough already). All this just translates this to MORE courses and MORE textbook costs….

    As someone who still living at home AND in a high cost of living state, I tried my chances by applying for FAFSA. Thankfully, the community college I applied to has given me some aid. But ALL the courses, I need TO take or trying to take are FULL. >.<” I just want my license while I’m 24. I know, I know, y’all hear tiny violins playing. But it is so hard to put those letters after your name.

    I like this rant lol. And employers don't want to pay us for our ever growing costs either. Doesn't help that we bill out at half what lawyers do but are much more trusted advisors…What gives? I heard in a recent CPE class and I need to look into it that if the iasb gets thier way it will become much easier for foriegn folks to become us CPAs by reciprocity without passing our test which they have to do now. If that comes to pass it will further dilute our certification which is a terrible prospect because I've invested alot of time,money,and energy to get where I am.

    I will have to tell you though. The CA certification isn't ANY easier. Also, I think there's a limit to how much you can take that exam. It's not just 4 parts, there's like multiple. So, I mean, reciprocity process is up to legislation. Just like how Trump was voted.

    What community college did you apply to? I'm in California too and had to find an alternate community college for ethics because course sections were full. I just registered for my course today.

    foothill college. Honestly, I might just take the spring class. I'm young, I'm just greedy and wanted my license sooner. I passed the exam before all those changes so I'm happy.

    Yeah, I was going to try Foothill College for ethics too and was dismayed to find out that all the sections are completely full. I'm going to take the Spring course at Mission College. It starts at the end of January.

    Actually this license is extremely cheap relative to law school, med school…

    @aaronmo such a pot stirrer. I realize the value of an MD or a JD…I do taxes for both of those occupations. The payback is well worth it in the end lol. The discussion is the value of a CPA designation and that varies widely by location and board requirements. I'm in GA, we don't have an ethics exam but we do have a 150 hour requirement so I got a master's stupidly in my younger years with the student loans to go with it. My 16 year old daughter wants to be an MD but I'm trying to persuade her into pharmacology because it's less school and more bang for your dollar. That's the sad part about working in tax in a small town…I know what everyone earns around here. RNs have a two year degree from the technical college-lpns are being phased out and they are earning 50k plus first year out of school so tell me again why CPAs aren't worth more?

    RNs don't have a skill set they can ply when retired. RNs likely cap out a lower rate. RNs don't have as clear a path to having their own practice…

    If you want to get into this job is overpaid vs. this job, you'll drive yourself nuts, and you'll also likely ignore the negatives of that choice. Life is a series of compromises…the grass is always greener…every rose has its thorn…etc.

    Lawyers don't have the easy path you think they do…if they did, I'd be an attorney. In my market they're a dime a dozen…and in debt up to their asses. Most doctors work their asses off, with insurance expenses through the roof.

    I could be making a lot more money in NY, but then I'd have to live in NY…life is a trade off.

    Believe me when I say I've held back…including on this thread 😉

    Sometimes there's just no rhyme or reason to the value of certain careers. You want a punch in the gut for earning a master's then making garbage money become a public school teacher or a social worker. You want to earn millions to work six months a year be REALLY GOOD at throwing a football (or catching one I suppose).

    I don't think this license is expensive compared to the payout you get once you are a CPA. I mean I'm only going to spend about $3-4,000. That's not even one semester at a public university.

    Can’t your employee reimburse your CC fees?

    I’m on the same boat as you, granted I’m a decade older than you, short over 30 quarter units!!!, also in CA, wife + kid, I want to also punch air for not passing these exams back in 2014 when there was no such additional 150 unit requirement…. I am also pissed that Foothill was full…and im hoping you don’t steal my spot come spring time lol

    With that said, all we can do is be happy we passed the exam before the 2017 changes….being 24 is a great age to keep going at it and not stop with your license goals but don’t stress about it too much… it will happen eventually, passing at 24 is very much a great start to your career.

    FAR - 56,68,73 - retake October hopefully (last shot)

    @Small4

    They only do that for a master's. These are supplemental CC classes for my license and my dept isn't on the high-end. We're a cost center so the budget itself is tight already. I was even apprehensive that they were going to pay for my exam fees. But yeah, I'm probably gonna do spring quarter and hope for a license issuance in July.

    @aaronmo

    While I dislike excuses as much as you do, it's part of life. People coming up with excuses for the exam is my coming up with excuses for exercising (now that I'm done). But failure is not the end of the world though. I actually appreciate the times that I've failed since it made me stronger and allowed me to evolve into a better person.
