Ethics Requirement – State differences

I recently passed the CPA exam and was preparing my application. I took a ethics course for Hawaii (my state) and passed to meet the 4 units of CPE required to get my PTP. I checked and other states require the AICPA ethics exam or something else. I notice quite a few states require the AICPA exam. I may never leave Hawaii for work but was wondering should I take the AICPA ethics exam? Will it make it easier if I were to move to a AICPA ethics exam state to meet the requirement to become a licensed CPA there?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you dont need it now I wouldn't worry about it. If you ever had to take it you could sit down and bust it out in a day

I think the AICPA score expires after two years, so I wouldn't do it until you need it for something else. But yes, a lot of states do require you to have that AICPA one to transfer your license in. As mentioned above, it's easy to bust it out in a day. I did it in about 6 hours.

On a semi-unrelated note, as a Minnesotan I cannot fathom why you would ever want to leave Hawaii, that sounds like heaven!

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering if I took it now would that help me in the future. I already took my CPE to meet my PTP so taking the AICPA course wouldn't help me other than for the ethics requirement in the future. I probably won't take it.

Hawaii is great but the Cost of Living is high. i live on Oahu one of the more populated islands out of the rest. I occasionally look at home prices on the mainland and it does get depressing due to the affordability. New Condos in town Oahu 2 br 2 bath 2 parking 800 sq ft is around high $600-$700K. Those condos offer little amenities. It gets crazy. Houses older than I am within a half an hour to hour of town run around $700-$1 million. It makes me wonder what it would be like to live somewhere with a nice house for $500k. My nice is actually just a average house on a small lot. With my friends and family here though I would probably never leave unless I was retiring.
