does the ethics exam need to be completed within the 18-month window? or is this out of scope for that requirement. I am having trouble finding anywhere this is addressed directly. many sites mention the ability to take before, but not much about whether your take after and how it is (or is not) impacted by the 18 months requirement. thanks!

Are you in a state with the AICPA exam? I'm in IL, and they let us take it whenever and it has no expiration. If your state board's site doesn't say anything, you might want to contact them.

FWIW – the AICPA exam is nothing to stress about. Once you purchase it then you have a year to finish it. All done, it took me about an hour or so.

I am also in IL, hoping to pass before my first section expires, but just want to make sure i understand this piece of it. so basically as long as I pass all 4 sections in 18 months, i can take ethics at my leisure?

Yep, you can do it whenever you want. It will never expire.
