    Hey All,

I currently have 135 credit hours, which include 36 hours of upper level accounting. I need an additional 15 credit hours, which I understand can be any level, any subject. I was thinking of going back and taking a bunch of only courses with a local community college. If I take some with an Accounting focus, my work will cover the cost of classes. I found 3 online freshmen/sophomore classes that I have not taken:

    -Computerized Accounting

    -Payroll Accounting

    -Income Tax Procedures

I talked to advisor at my University and she said that sometimes the state board will not accept credits for duplicate classes. She mentioned because these classes may be similar to upper level accounting classes, the state board might count these as “duplicate” classes.

Also, there are some “Intro to management” and “Intro to Marketing”, both freshmen/sophomore level courses, are available to take as “Clep” tests. I have never taken a freshmen or sophomore level management or marketing class, but I did take “management fundamentals” and “marketing fundamentals” at an upper level at my four year university. They are different course numbers, but I imagine the material is similar.

Any thoughts? Has anyone ever run into this issue?

I am having the same question. I have a BS in Accounting so I have already taken a lot of accounting and business classes. I need 20 credits to reach the 150 mark and I called my state board (NY) and they told me that I can even take CLEP or DANTE tests but I have to be careful about duplicating classes. When I asked them how I would know, they said they can't tell me because I didn't apply yet for a license. Well I obviously didn't apply because I didn't fulfill the educ requirement so I'm not sure what to do now – apply early and maybe they'll tell me what to do?

When I applied for my credential review I had 165 hours total but the IL state board told me I had to take another accounting class because I had what they called a duplicate. Yes, they kicked it back and made me re-take another course before I could move forward with the exams.

Tip: In IL (at least – I don't know about other states) you can request a credential review PRIOR to graduation and they will tell you exactly what you need to be eligible to sit for your exams.

I checked with my state board (California), and was told that if the class titles are different, and the class is taken at a different school, then you will get credit even if the content is similar.

For example, I took “Intro to Accounting” in undergrad, and asked about taking “Financial Accounting I” at my local community college. I copied over the course titles and descriptions, and was told via email that because they are two different course titles taken at different schools, I will get credit for both classes. If the class titles are similar/same, I'm not sure if it would work that way though.

Flora, that's what I was wondering. For example, I have taken “Tax Accounting” as a 3000 level course at a state university. “Income Tax Procedures” is offered at a local community college as a 2000 level. I took Accounting Information Systems as a 3000 level at the university, but could take “Computerized Accounting” as a 2000 level at the community college.
