Does tax-only work satisfy the experience requirement?

Recently passed the exam, now looking for my very first job in accounting.

Has anyone satisfied their licensure work requirement by working in a CPA firm that does nothing but tax work (i.e., no audit at all)?

Specifics of the requirement vary by state, of course, but I’m looking for a general answer. The problem is, the printed regulations for my state are so vague that it just isn’t clear if I can do nothing but taxes and still get licensed.

    Thanks, everyone.

Call your state board. There is no such thing as a general answer.

In MA, there is no way that would satisfy the experience requirement. In other states, as long as a licensed CPA signs off your experience can be almost anything accounting related.

I would cringe to think of you making any type of career decision based on a message board. Its a great resource, but get it straight from your board.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

I work at a small CPA firm in SC that does strictly tax work. I just got my license this year and the board here in SC was fine with my experience of all tax.

It's so specific by state. I don't do any tax or audit whatsoever but my work in corporate accounting worked in NY.

In California there are two licenses. One is the “regular” one that requires a certain amount of audit hours. With that license, you can sign financial statement reports.

The other license does not require audit hours so tax only experience is enough, but with that license you cannot sign the reports for attest engagements. But it's still a CPA license.
