I am an international student. i currently sit the exam for illinois state. i just found out that they require 1 year experience in order to get a license. i used to work couple years in financial firm as administrative assistant before i sat for the exam. will this qualify for the experience ? or should I transfer to other state ? which states don’t require an experience. i just want to hold title as CPA if i pass 🙂

No, admin work at a financial firm will not fulfill the experience requirement for becoming a CPA. I am not aware of any states that do not require work experience to be licensed CPA. In general, you must have auditing and assurance experience at a public accounting firm. The specific skills required are listed in the Board of Accountancy website of the state you are applying for. Sorry but there's no short cut to get a CPA license without experience in public accounting. If you work as an Internal Auditor in a privately held company, you might be able to appeal to the board to get your earned hours count toward the experience requirement

    BEC - 86 (8/31/12)
    AUD - 97 (11/18/12)
    REG - 83 (5/12/13)
    FAR - 91 (12/2/13)
    Done!!!

Some states are more liberal than others as to what qualifies as experience. Usually it needs to be attest function but there are some states that don't specify-you would have to have a licensed CPA sign off on your experience though and that would probably be a challenge.

You can get a non-reporting license in MA without experience but you must have a masters degree or greater. Simply having 150 hours would still require a year experience.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

in Louisiana your experience can be either in public or Industry but it must be Accounting experience. Each state has its own requirements.

Hi, I just started studying and preparing for the cpa exam as well..i just graduated in an accounting with my gpa at a dismal 3.0..

This may be a stupid question but.. here goes…

I am trying to sit for and pass the cpa exam.. but I am missing the experience requirement because i doubt i can currently gain employment with a cpa firm with my gpa.. I am trying to pass the exam and use it as a sort of leverage to get into a public accounting firm.. Is this a good or bad idea.. This is in California.

any insight would be helpful.. Thanks!

I believe that cpa license can differentiate you from other candidates but it is not guarantee to get into public accounting firm.
