CPA Application question

Hey there, I’m about to send the CPA application and am a little weary about qualifying for the work requirements.

I’m in Georgia and have worked as a Financial Analyst doing forecasting, budgeting, financial statement analysis, ad hoc stuff, etc for about 5 years. So nothing audit, tax, or other heavy accounting related. I work under a CPA so I qualify for that and I meet the 1 year requirement.

Is there anyone out there with a similar background that might have some advice on how to best present yourself? Or maybe has anyone applied for the CPA only to be rejected based on not meeting work requirement?

Or maybe I’m freaking out about nothing. I’m just a little worried that after working at this thing for more than 2 years that I’ll be rejected at the finish line!

    Thanks in advance.

Hmm, I was under the impression that as long as you worked for 1 year under a CPA, that you met the experience requirement for certification. However, you may want to double check with your state board of accountancy, or rather, the AICPA. I like calling people…it assigns accountability. Congratulations and good luck!

Hey there @GtcpaAlmost. @BaseballCPA is right. Your best bet is calling your state board and the AICPA about the requirement. Georgia and Colorado, among several other states appear to require direct supervision under a CPA to count for the hours, however, states like Massachusetts exclusively seem to require a year of public accounting for a restricted license. The MA board website states that it will be unrestricted (to issue reports) for us by completing 6 months of reporting which may overlap. Disclaimer: This is entirely my interpretation and I do NOT claim to be an authority on the subject! Contact the board/AICPA. It indeed appears that the experience requirement is out of the way for you, however 🙂

I agree that the answer to your question is probably different state to state. I know I don't meet the work requirement but I am perfectly ok with a non reporting license. It is my understanding that the only significance to my license being different is that I cannot sign off as having an opinion on financial statements which is not my career goal anyway.

Hey chizcurlz, are you advertising your CPE website or are you a CPA candidate? Legitimately curious!

They registered today — linked to their CPE site and then posted like 10 times.

    I wouldn't have noticed if he/she hadn't bumped a year-old thread 🙂
