Hello- I am pretty sure this has been discussed, but cannot find a topic specific to Colorado. I have my MS in Accounting, and I had a capstone class that of course covered ethics, but I don’t have a class that specifically has “accounting ethics” in the title. Has anyone applied in CO and had this be an issue? Has your application for your license been denied only because of this?

I have called my board (and emailed) but have not received a response from them.

I am glad that I found this thread. I tested as a NM candidate (w/all education requirements met), but just found out that we will be moving to CO in a few weeks. Since I just got my last passing score on the 16th, this is all new to me, so I appreciate the information here in regards to the CO education requirements. I am waiting to hear back from cpaes-CO before I transfer all of my scores from NM, but I guess I will start looking into that classes that I am going to need (an additional auditing course and accounting ethics, as previously mentioned).

I am wondering if I should just apply for NM licensure and then transfer through reciprocity, like some have suggested? Will the license transfer if the education requirements are different?…or will I need to fulfill those classes to get licensed regardless? Very curious, indeed.

    Music,

I'm afraid the answer isn't that simple. You have to prove that your license is in a “substantial equivalent” state. As to what defines substantial equivalency, it's subjective. You don't have to prove that the state requires the exact same education classes, but you will have to prove NM requires classes that are to an equivalent level overall. I hate to say this, but having dealt with the COCPA directly, you will have an uphill battle regardless. Do remember that the only reason you would need to hold a CO license is if you are signing audit reports in the state. You can practice as a CPA in Colorado and claim you are a CPA even if you hold a license elsewhere. Hope this helps.

I did mine through New Mexico and will be doing reciprocity through Texas. I didn't have a college accounting ethics class either and it is required by Texas. However if going through reciprocity, they allow a Texas Ethics Class that counts for CPE to replace the college class. I have already taken it and now I am just waiting on background check and application submittal.

Thanks so much for the responses, guys. I am moving forward with my NM licensure as we speak! Will take the extra classes as necessary, depending on the requirements of my future employer. Happy New Year!
