I have had some performance issues and it is in my employee record, just wanted to see if anyone knew if it was still possible for a sign off. I am in California and was reading about this on the board’s website. I am just looking for the general accounting sign off and they are not as specific as attest experience. Please let me know, thanks!

P.S. I was thinking of just asking my supervisor directly if this would be a problem after 1 year here, but did not know if that was appropriate.

I have had issues with performance, and the company altogether. It just is not a good fit for me and would like to start at another job if this was going to be an issue

    From the form:

General accounting experience may include providing any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attest, compilation, management advisory, financial advisory, tax or consulting skills. To qualify, experience shall have been performed in accordance with applicable professional standards.

I hereby certify, under penalty of perjury under the laws of the state of California, that the applicant (1) has been supervised or employed by me or my business/agency for the period indicated herein, and (2) has completed general accounting experience.

My guess is that your supervisor could say you did not perform your work “in accordance with applicable professional standards.”

Teatime do you have the 150 units? Or are you trying to pass by YE? Good news is that if you pass the exams you could leave and get your experience signed off elsewhere if your current supervisor will not sign off. If I were you, I'd do my very best for the next few months and turn it around and get your experience signed off there. IMO you don't want those people that you currently work with to think you are a horrible employee. My first job was as an auditor and that firm is now auditing my current employer AND we just hired a new controller, my boss, who is a former employee of the firm also. It is a small accounting world.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

@wizards – yes that is exactly what I am thinking she could do

@Steph I have the units and I qualify either way – though I want to pass by the end of the year! I think you are right that I should try to turn this around. I am just afraid even if I do turn it around at the end they will say it wasn't a whole year because of those issues. I guess I will just turn it around and wait this out, thanks!!

If you're stealing funds and trading on client secrets, then definitely I'd say there's professional standards not being followed. But if it's other things, like you don't care for your coworkers or they have crappy computers, then I don't think you should worry.

If you end up not sticking around, then definitely ask to have your hours signed off before you leave. If the company decides to push you out, definitely have your hours signed off before you sign any releases, or anything. You are a bigger liability headache to them than you realize.

    Couldn't pass again!

Interesting thread… I actually left my full-time position at a firm in November 2012 (I was teaching as well, and now that has become more a full-time assignment), and the only reason that I stayed that long was for the work experience hours. It was a small firm, and I didn't care for the partner much at all. I was really concerned that she would refuse to endorse my work experience because I refused to return for the 2013 tax season (when I resigned, her comment was that “you're really good at taxes so this puts me in a bad spot for tax season”). Fortunately, I learned that work experience in my state could be not only from public practice, but industry, government, and academia as well, and I had more than enough hours from that. It's a good thing; I didn't want to deal with that individual again.

I would think it would depend on how poorly your performance is. If it's just a couple minor things, I don't think it will be an issue.
