Hi all – I have a question for those of you out there living in California.

I passed my exams and completed all the items on the CPA license application checklist.
However, my former employer said they might not be able to certify my experience by 12/31/16 since people are going to be out of the office for the holidays as early as next week.

If the CBA does not receive my Certificate of Experience from my employer by 12/31/16, does that mean I have to go back to school to get an additional 3 units in Accounting Ethics? I have completed everything else as I mentioned above, including the Livescan, PETH, etc. The changes in CA’s educational requirements are a nightmare and I can’t believe I might have to go back to school and delay getting my license # by another 5-6 months because of something out of my control.

I wish I would have asked for my certificate before I passed my exams (is this even allowed?). I only just found out about this change in the Ethics requirements last week.

Hi crazygoliath, congratulations! I will submit my application in a few weeks too. I took Ethics class just in case. But I don't understand why it takes so long to get your experience signed. It took 5 mins to get mine (general experience) signed. Your manager/supervisor has to be CPA. Anyone above him or her could sign as the 2nd signer. If I were you, I will bring the paper in person and ask your former supervisor and boss to sign it. If you don't live locally, I would use expedite carrier service. Good luck.

Basically yes, if you don't meet the 12/31 deadline you will have to take the ethics class. Unfortunately, I knew about the coming changes for the past few years and still put it off to the point that I'm going to have to take the ethics class. I'm surprised you didn't know about the changes until last week considering you have timed passing your exams pretty much perfectly.

Yes! If you do not have every form submitted, you will have to take the additional class.

Get that form signed!!!! Find a way to do it.

You could have had that form signed before you passed any exams, but that doesn't matter. You need to find a way to get that thing out. Mail it to whoever needs to sign it and have them mail it the CBA. Where there is a will, there's a way!!!

So I've been pre-approved for my license and am basically just waiting for them to cash my check and issue me a license number. But with the way the CBA works, I'm fearful that they won't get this done until 2017. If I've been pre-approved but no number yet, do I have to worry about taking the extra ethics class if I don't get my license number until 2017???

    AUD - 82
    BEC - 80
    REG - 85

    ETHICS - 90

^^^^I'd say you are fine. Not sure if the OP will make the cutoff though..

@CPA2BEE you are not subject to the new requirements so long as all documents are submitted. If you've already been approved, and you are just waiting for your number, then you are fine! Stay patient. It took a long while to get my number issued. Just keep emailing them every day or two. They can give you your number via email and then you don't have to wait for the letter in the mail.

Got in touch with my former employer and the partner signed off!
I will probably meet the deadline!!!

Hopefully I meet all the criteria for the 150 units.
I probably double checked this 2 years ago when I graduated, but I can't stop worrying about all the small stuff ~_~.

EDIT: I most likely met the requirements since it was a requirement before starting my previous job, but I can't stop feeling like there can be a small hiccup that will prevent me from my path to finally becoming licensed.

Do you know of any online courses that we could take to fulfill the ethic requirements?

Cabrillo college has a 4 unit semester course online for accounting ethics. The book is older and cheap. The class is accelerated into 8 weeks and is super easy. I recommend it if anyone is looking for an easy course.
