CA Educational Requirements

    Hiya Ninjas!
I need some extra creative thinking from this forum.
I have 166 credit hours across 31 years and 6 universities (don’t ask!).
However, when I did the CA self-assessment, I seem to be 4.33 semester credits shy of the extra “Accounting Study” now required.
“Accounting Study” can comprise Assurance, Attestation, Bookkeeping, Cost and QuickBooks.

I would LOVE to have this wrapped up by December so I don’t have to add on additional classes when CA changes the requirements yet again.

Has anyone had luck with independent study/alternative credit programs?
Online, continuous enrollment, distance learning, self-paced?
The local community colleges near me are completely full (even online).
I am running out of time and choices and really wish I had a mentor to just plug me into a program.
Thanks for any and all suggestions!

How close are you to being done? Have you passed the exams already?

I ask because @ 12.31.2016. California will be adding yet another class to the required class list. There is a mandatory ethics class that my college started teaching the semester after I graduated. So I am doing everything I can to make sure I have my license before the end of the year.

If you haven't passed your exams yet, I would recommend looking into schools offering the mandatory ethics class and maybe you can kill two birds with one stone. Other than that, I don't have much advice for you. Good luck on the CPA journey.

Thanks. I have officially passed them all, but REG expired so I am waiting for my retake score. I passed PETH (CA ethics) and have experience signoff.
I'm sooooooo close to being done, and I would love to not have to go on any longer than needed!

Not through CA board, but I have had success with LSU's continuous enrollment self-paced classes. All of my accounting courses were through them. I also took many credits via credit by exam, but many state boards have begun limiting what they'll accept via those methods and there's limited options for accounting material anyway, so I'd probably stay away from that and not risk it. But, continuous enrollment classes from a fully accredited college shouldn't be an issue at all. There's also Fall II semesters starting up for online classes all over at non-continuous-enrollment-schools that you might be able to enroll in – that's usually a mid-October start and would allow you to complete it before December 31, though getting transcripts in to the start board by December 31 may get a bit tight. For those, you could just call schools in the area that are 4-year schools and ask if you'd be able to take 1 or 2 classes as a non-degree seeking student, then find out if they offer the right accounting courses online (presuming they don't have enough information online to answer that question). The college I work at has many Fall II courses online and transcripts would be ready in time, but we're a small school and I'm pretty sure we don't have accounting offerings to help you. However, if as a small school with a small business department we have the capabilities just not the courses, I'm sure there's many many other schools that have the capabilities and the courses both! 🙂

I took all my accounting classes at Foothill College. Affordable and 100% online.

I also recommend Foothill College online classes. I took 3 online classes for the summer to fulfill my requirements. I will take 2 more classes next quarter. The fall class starts on 9/26, and there are still a lot of classes available. But make sure that you do not take duplicate class. If you take the similar classes from multiple schools, the board considers them as duplicate and won't give you the full credits.

I would love to take courses at Foothill, but they are totally full with a full waitlist. 🙁

Sorry, I forgot the part in which you mentioned that you wanted this to be done by December. I do not think thats possible with Foothill College because it takes a week or 2 to apply and get approved, and its most likely that the classes would have started already by now or by then. If you want to get it done through Foothill, the soonest would be March of 2017.

I see many classes open right now without a waitlist. I don't remember how long it took to get approved….hmmm.

Shipping transcripts to fulfill advanced class requirements might be the most time consuming part of applying.

I emailed the transcript with the form. It took about 5 days, and they cleared all other requirements. Also, when you are waitlisted, you will get the code from your instructor. So you will get in.

So they are strict about the accounting prereqs. I took a tax class and they never asked for any transcripts. Then again, that class only has “advisory” math and English prereqs.

It's so confusing. I have taken most of the accounting coursework that community colleges offer, so find myself with either graduate-level classes or off-beat QuickBooks type which seem to only have 1.5 units, which means I would have to take 10 classes this fall and all seem to be full. I just emailed my alma mater to see if I can do some independent study with a professor.

Have you applied to Foothill yet? Doesn't cost anything to apply.

Is there something wrong with LSU that will make them not count? Their classes don't have the option to fill up cause there's no class size, and they're open-enrollment so you can't miss enrollment deadline…
