littlenumberrobotMember@DiscoCisco – it does not give extra time to pass the exam, only get licensed.

evesocalMember@littlenumberrobot, that was a prior proposal, I think – that you still had to pass all 4 exams in 2013 and if you did, you did not need 150 credits. But this article seems different:
>>The new guidelines will extend present license pathways until December 31, 2015. That allows more time for current license candidates to study for CPA exam completion. Licenses will still be issued for accountants with passing test scores and a baccalaureate, along with mandatory experience. <<
See what I mean? It says it allows more time for “candidates to study for CPA exam completion”. So it seems like you do not have to pass all 4 exams in 2013 anymore – at least IF this proposal passes. Pathways 1 and 2 continue through 2015. Or am I not understanding it?
So confusing. This is a constant topic in my office and no one knows what to think.

HustlinHustlinMemberI hope Eve's thinking is right, but then again – I have a few coworkers who passed quick and already took the classes but won't meet the experience until after the deadline. So I know some people who paid for courses will be pretty ticked…
The 150 is silly though…I get why they would add the new specific requirements of 20 units relating to accounting and ethics courses but really, what does taking an astronomy course for 3 extra credits really have to do with your profession? It's a joke.

HustlinHustlinMemberIt was a mess for the people I know who aren't getting their masters to register though…nothing available and the price for even a community college is through the roof now.
Isn't there already a huge issue with impacted classes in CA? I know it was steadily getting worse when I graduated in 2011. This is not going to be any help.

so1913ParticipantSo wait, CA won't have a grandfather clause??
Here were NY's requirements when they changed to 150 credits a few years ago:
Effective August 1, 2009, applicants for licensure as a CPA will be
required to meet New York’s 150 semester hour education requirements.
An applicant can be grandfathered under the 120 semester hour
requirement if:
• They have submitted an application for licensure (the NYS Form 1
and the $345.00 application fee) to the State Education
Department that is postmarked by August 1, 2009; and
• Their bachelors (or higher) degree is conferred by August 1, 2009;
and
• They have completed all of the course work required to meet the
120 semester hour requirements by August 1, 2009.
Applicants that meet the above requirements may be licensed based
on 120 semester hours, even if they pass the CPA Exam after August 1,
2009.
It wasn't based on actually passing the exam. Fortunately I did all this by 2007, so even now when as I work to finish the exam, I will still be able to get licensed under 120.
Most accounting programs are built around CPA requirements in that state. This is why a lot of schools are now offering 5 year programs to accomodate the increased 150 credit rule. I guess NY figured people should not be penalized that they were in an accounting program that was structured around the requirements at that time and to give folks a break.
That sucks CA!

littlenumberrobotMemberOkay I came back and edited this to be more helpful. I'm sorry for anyone who read what I said before I had any coffee,,,,,
@so1913 – No CA does not have grandfather clause.
@eve…. the old legislation meant you had to PASS and have your license application(including all your experience signed off) in before 12/31/13 to apply under the old pathways… with this change NOW you may only pass your exams, and finish your experience up later and still apply under the pathways that were in place at the time you passed.
@everyone else reading this thread… Read the legislation not just an article. The legislation is more a reputable source.
Good luck to you all!

Frank_ReynoldsMemberI graduated with 148 units 🙁
I've already registered at the local JC so I can meet the new requirements. It sucks to be so close, but at least it's only one class.

jeffKeymasterTo piggy back on StephenAV's post:
CA BOA: “Unfortunately, your article is not completely factual. The proposed legislation will not afford an individual any additional time to pass the Uniform CPA Exam. The extension of the licensure pathways would only apply to individuals who pass all four parts of the Uniform CPA Exam by December 31, 2013. Under the proposed legislation, an individual who passes all four parts of the Uniform CPA Exam by December 31, 2013 would have until December 31, 2015 to complete his/her experience, ethics examination, and fingerprinting requirements, and apply for CPA licensure under one of the two existing pathways.”

Dave over there keeps a tight watch on the bill. Or click on the other links I posted and just keep checking to see when the decision is final. It's a close call, but basically you will still need to pass the exams by the end of the year anyways. You just won't be rushing to get in your application in December.
