To take 22 credit hours at a community college in the fall semester? I would never think of doing that at a university, but am just wondering how hard the classes are at a cc? All but 1 of them would be online. Fortunately, I don’t work but I have a 2 and 7 year old. I have free time while my little one naps (about 3 hours a day) and then after he goes to bed, so realistically can spend about 5 hours a day on coursework. I should hopefully be done with my last exam the week after classes start.

Are there any midsession summer courses that you can still sign up for? Maybe even doing one or 2 of them for a few weeks in August will relieve some of the potential pressure in the fall………

Are you sure your state allows you to take those courses to meet the 150 hr requirement? I know in the state of Texas once you receive your degree, you are limited on the types of courses they will allow to meet the 150. I had to take approved upper level courses. They wouldnt let me take Home Eco 101 because I already had a degree. If your state allows that, then I wish Texas would follow their lead. Here is what we had to do:

The 150 semester hours or quarter hour equivalents of courses may be obtained in one of the following ways:

Complete a master's degree or higher degree conferred by a university that is recognized by the Board.

Complete the upper level accounting courses needed to take the CPA examination. The hours required for a baccalaureate degree plus the additional hours must equal or exceed 150 semester hours.

Complete additional semester hours or quarter hour equivalents of upper level courses that enhance professional skills and competence, beyond the accounting hours required for a baccalaureate degree in accounting, from a university that is recognized by the Board. The hours required for a baccalaureate degree plus the additional hours must equal or exceed 150 semester hours. The coursework should be in established courses offered through colleges within the university, such as architecture, business administration, communications, engineering, fine arts, liberal arts, science, or another established discipline.

@mla – I had actually thought about doing that, but I'm taking REG at the end of August and thought that might be too much. I want to make sure I'm completely focused on the exam so I can hopefully pass REG the first time.

@dp – I'm sure I can do that. I called the VA Board of Accountancy, and they told me that I can take any classes I want to as long as they aren't equivalents to ones I've already taken at Virginia Tech. It's silly I know – I wish they would either drop the 150 hour requirement or make additional business/accounting classes mandatory. It drives me crazy how I have to take these classes just for the sake of having 150 hours when they will do nothing to help me in my career. Obviously I could take graduate level classes, but they are so expensive and I just don't want to take on more debt right now… I need to be saving for my 2 kids's college education and not paying for another degree for me that most likely won't benefit me career-wise anyways. The VA BOA did post on their website that they recommend you take graduate courses, but it's not required. Here's the link in case you want to compare… https://www.boa.virginia.gov/CPALicense/BecomeCPA.shtml

I am glad your state allows that. Texas basically does up until you have your first degree. After that you are limited to upper level undergraduate courses and graduate level courses to meet the requirement. Its all pretty silly, I agree. I did exactly what you did…the fastest route to 150.

Another thing to consider with any classes you take is to see what the prof's average grades are on Myedu. That is how I selected my professors because I knew going into it that it would be a cake walk.

Have you considered CLEP courses? I took clep for intro to macro and micro, intro to managment, marketing and philosophy (my school only accepts 15 CLEP credits) but it saved me a lot of time and $$.

Otherwise, I think you would should be fine, the strategy to taking so many courses is not to fall behind and not expect perfection. SNHU ( my university) divides their semesters into quarters, and the normal is 1-2. I've been taking 3 courses a quarter = about 18 credits and I work full time, so I think you can do it!

Like my brother says: What do they call the person who graduates from medical school in the bottom of their class?

    Doctor! 😀

    Good luck!

I took 23 credits at a liberal arts college last semester, and I couldn't imagine getting them done in only 5 hours per day; it was probably closer to 12 hours per day! It depends a lot on the classes, of course, but you might have quite a few long nights…

@dp – I checked out the myedu site, but the cc I'm attending isn't on there 🙁 That's too bad b/c it looks like I could get a lot of great info from it. Thanks for sharing.

@rhody – I had never heard of CLEP courses until someone had posted about them earlier, but after doing some research, the cc where I'm taking classes will only give you CLEP credits if you are enrolled in a degree or certificate program. Since I'm just taking random classes, I don't qualify. Otherwise I would definitely take advantage of them because it's basically just a self-study course like the CPA exam.

@CPA – what kinds of classes were you taking? I can't imagine doing 12 hours of coursework a day.

Thanks again for all the great responses!

Most of my classes were business related. Of course, only you know exactly how well you can focus, how much sleep you need, how quickly you can complete assignments, and how well you can retain/recall information, and the exact amount of time these classes will take depends quite a bit on these factors.
