So I was just licensed in New York and the state exempts new CPAs from CPE requirements for their first three years of licensure. However, it looks like the AICPA has their own, separate CPE requirement for membership. Can this be correct? I don’t have to do CPE to be a NY CPA for three years, but I DO need to do CPE if I want to join the AICPA?

New York: All newly licensed CPAs (including endorsements from other licensing jurisdictions) are automatically exempted from meeting CPE requirements during their initial triennial registration period. CPE requirements do not take effect until the second registration period.

AICPA: From January 1, 2001, forward and for each three-year reporting period thereafter, you agree to complete 120 hours, or its equivalent, of continuing professional education.
