Accounting Ethics Licensure Requirement

    Hi All,

I graduated with all the requirements needed to be licensed back in 2013. I subsequently passed all my exams back in late 2015. Due to being busy with work and other reasons I didn’t follow through with the actual licensing requirements til just recently. Recently it has come to my attention that to be licensed in California 3 of the 10 semester units need to be in specifically accounting ethics as of January 1, 2017. A few questions I have:

    1. There is no way I am exempt from this given I graduated in 2013 and passed all the exams in 2015 correct? This is a licensing requirement and therefore I would need to go back to school and take a class to meet this requirement. This is my assumption and what it seems like based on my initial research, but would love it if someone told me I was wrong and there is somewhat of a “Grandfathered-In” scenario.

    2. If my assumption is correct, and that I’ll need to take a class, does anyone know any online community college accelerated options? My promotion season is this summer and my promotion is dependent on being licensed. I originally thought I had plenty of time, but now it looks like that may be in jeopardy.

I appreciate any insight you all can give.

As a follow up – Would taking the Accounting Ethics course at the University of Phoenix work to fulfill the requirement? I see they are accredited regionally, but not sure if that counts. Wanted to see if anyone has insight on this as well.

I would just take the UCLA Extension Ethics in Accounting course online.

You will not be grandfathered in. There is no such exemption. You are required to have the course completed to be licensed. Had you filed all of your paperwork prior to Dec 31, 2016 you would not have been subject to the requirement, but since that time has passed, you are subject to all current requirements.

As far as, finding out if a course will be accepted, I'd recommend calling the CBA and talking to them about it. In my experience, they are actually pretty helpful when you talk to them. If they aren't call again and talk to someone else. That office is extremely slow, but very helpful.
