Does it have to be working under the same CPA firm?? If I work for a CPA firm for 6 months, then another CPA firm for 6 months, does it count?

Any update whether it has to be a full year under the same one CPA, or can it be two different CPA in state of CA?

I can verify that the experience in California can be under different CPAs and it does not need to be continuous. I was recently approved for my license (pending my $120 fee, which I sent in last week) and I had 4 months of work completed under a California CPA in 2010 and the remaining 8 months completed in 2012-2013 under a Colorado CPA. All the CBA requires is that each person verifying your work experience fill out and send in a form. If the CPA signing off is out of state then the CBA will send back another form to you that you then forward on to the out of state Accounting board to verify that CPA's credentials.

@Lilla – Interesting requirements for KY. Are you sure that you can have a CPA sign off on your work if he was not a manager over you while you were completing the work? Seems strange that KY would allow that.

I wonder if that 1 year of working experience has to be done after all 4 parts are passed?

    Any past experience counts?

I am working for the CPA for over 7 years and I would like to change my job as soon as I get my license.

@Bea – I would double check with your board of accounting to make sure that the link that you posted is correct. I know that in Delaware you can use any qualifying experience that was earned within the last ten years provided that it was obtained after graduating with a bachelors degree. I had a boss that I worked for from 1998 until 2006 sign off on my experience because I do not report to an actively licensed CPA at my current job.

    REG - 11/5/2012 - 80
    BEC - 1/17/2013 - 76
    AUD - 2/22/2013 - 70 4/5/2013 - 75
    FAR - 5/28/2013 - 75 - Done!!!

Question: What do you call someone who only gets 75's and 76's on the four parts of the CPA exam?

    Answer: A CPA

@Bea: Get the sign-off first. If your state require the cpa signature, get it first. Some places don't take kindly to leaving and then coming back for a signature. It could get a little sticky if the relationship end on the wrong note.

    It begins with a 75

In CA you can get the work experience before, during, or after passing the CPA exam. And as dodgerdawg said, the 1 year experience doesn't have to be consecutive.

And it's a good idea to get the sign-off form ASAP. I know some firms which wouldn't sign off your experience if you don't stay with them for at least 2 years or until after you pass the exam but it's not required…they are just being…you-know-what…

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14
