Welp, looks like I am 2 units short on the Ethics classes section. Thought I had it covered. I have 150+ units, not problem, but I don’t have enough classes that fit the ethics studies section I think. Pretty depressing. Already submitted my application, but since it take 6-8 weeks, It is going to be a while until I know for sure. And by the time that happens, it would be too late for me to take register for summer classes at my local community college. So, I already submitted applications to 2 of my local CC’s. Classes from the CC level will fulfill the ethics requirement, right?

That depends entirely on the state. Some yes, some no, some sometimes. For example, Texas has 4 community colleges that have courses specifically approved by the state board to meet CPA requirements.
Florida CPA!
Took final exam 2/25/15.
Sent in Application 3/12/15.
Issued License 3/20/15.
Used CPA Excel solely for all exams.March 24, 2015 at 3:13 pm #659587AnonymousInactiveI am in California. And their requirements and details of the requirements are very vague on the accountancy board. That is why I initially thought I qualified to sit. There is no mention of where and where I can't take classes to fulfill these requirements. Any help by anybody would be great. The plan right now is to take an online class at my local JC over the summer.
March 24, 2015 at 3:46 pm #659588AnonymousInactiveThis just gets more confusing.
I emailed the California Board of Accountancy and here is what they said.
Dear **********,
Thank you for contacting California Board of Accountancy (CBA). When the examination application is reviewed, it will be reviewed for examination requirements only. To qualify to take the CPA Exam as a California candidate, applicants must meet the following educational requirements at the time of applying for the exam:
· Completion of a baccalaureate degree or higher from a nationally or regionally accredited U.S. degree-granting educational institution or the equivalent foreign education.
· 24-semester units of accounting.
· 24-semester units of business-related courses.
Due to the high volume of requests the CBA is unable to evaluate transcripts for licensing requirements until an application for licensure has been received. Applicants wishing to challenge a course they have already taken because they believe it may qualify for the ethics study requirement are advised to make their request in writing, identify the key words from the tip sheet that may qualify the course, and provide a course description, syllabus or any other documentation that may help the CBA qualify the course. The request must be submitted with your application. This is particularly helpful when the course title has consequently changed, or when the full course title does not appear on the transcript but instead in the course description or syllabus. Please note that the CBA cannot guarantee the outcome of any challenge to the ethics study requirement.
Additional courses may be taken at a local community college that is regionally or nationally accredited.
Additional information regarding the licensing process, requirements and fees can be found in the CBA’s CPA Licensing Applicant Handbook. All CBA Initial Licensing Unit forms are available on the CBA’s website.
If you have any additional questions regarding initial licensure, please contact the Initial Licensing Unit by email at licensinginfo@cba.ca.gov or by telephone at (916) 561-1701.
Sincerely,

So, correct me if I am wrong, it is telling me that there are no Ethics requirement to sit for the exam. I just have to meet the 24 units of accounting 24 units of business related classes and have a Bachelors to be approved to sit and take all four parts of the exam. But, it is when I complete and pass all 4 parts and then submit for the actual license is when they look at the ethics requirement? But, don't you already have to take an ethics test after passing all 4 parts regardless?

March 24, 2015 at 10:24 pm #659590StephAVMemberYou can do community college courses. You might check out this worksheet from calcpa
I took courses through University of Northern Alabama CPA Prep Program… If you took AUD or BLAW that should go towards your ethics (although I think they cap out the units you can get from AUD towards Ethics at 3 or 4 or 2)?? I think the UNA program, you could likely still register for spring and have it done before summer. The price is $475 (or something like that) and that is all in, no additional text book or registration fees.
Wiley CPAexcel
I am from California and called the board about repeating courses (like audit and tax that I took in college) and they said as long as it is a different university then there is no problem… The classes aren't “easy” but you can get through them at your own pace and they are working towards prepping you for the exam… Two birds, one stone!
FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.March 24, 2015 at 10:26 pm #659591StephAVMemberJust saw your questions below. You can take the exam, but need the additional unit requirements to be licensed. AND you have to do an Ethics Exam…

But doesn't those classes fulfill the Accounting Studies section? None of those qualify for the ethics section. The ethics section is actually non accounting classes for the most part. Like, a class I am looking at, which is offered at my local CC is Human Resource Management.
But, ya if I needed to fulfill the actual accounting classes, then I'd probably do that.
But back on track. That is good news I can still sit. So, lets say I pass all 4 parts, and the ethics test, and then apply for my license, how do they know I fulfilled the ethic studies requirement? Do I also submit my transcripts to them? Because I already sent my transcripts when I applied to sit, but of course those will show that I am short on the ethics classes, at what point and to whom do I send my updated transcripts with my completed ethics class? which will hopefully be at the end of June/beginning of July.
Thanks!
March 25, 2015 at 1:33 am #659593AnonymousInactiveAlso, this will be a nightmare, but I also worry too much. But anyways, does lower division accounting classes county? When I declared to be an Accounting major, I had to take basic entry level Accounting classes that even non Accounting business majors have to take. One is Financial Accounting and the other is Managerial accounting. Once I completed those, then I was able to start my upper division core classes. I can still count those 2 class right? If not, then I am screwed.
Here is what it looks like for me assuming those 2 classes count:
Accounting Subjects:
Acct 201 (3 units): Lower Division Financial Accounting
Acct 202 (3 units): Lower Division Managerial Accouting
officially in the Accounting Program
Acct 321 (6 units): Financial Accounting & Tax Accounting
Acct 322 (6 units): Financial Accounting & Managerial Accounting
Acct 421 (6 units): Audit &???? I forgot exactly
^^ So that right there fulfills the main Accounting Requirement of 24 units. Those lower division classes count, right?
No onto the Additional accounting studies requirement, which requires a minimum of 6 accounting units and the rest business related classes. I can't double dip right? So, the business classes I used for the Business Related subjects can't be used here, right?
Additional Accounting Studies:
Acct 575 (3 units): Accounting Information Systems
Acct 503 (3 units): Individual Taxation
If those lower division accounting classes don't count, they I have to move these 2 accounting class up to the first section, which would leave me 2 accounting classes short in this one.
March 25, 2015 at 2:58 pm #659594AnonymousInactiveAlso, this is a bit confusing:
On of CBA tip sheet under the ethics section it says that a Financial Statement Auditing class only counts as 1 unit towards the 10 units of required ethics classes.
https://www.dca.ca.gov/cba/applicants/tip_sheet.pdf
But on the same site, but in the Q&A section, this question was posted and CBA posted an answer that contradicts that requirement
https://www.dca.ca.gov/cba/faqs/faqlic.shtml
“How many units of financial statement auditing qualify for ethics study?
Presently, you may satisfy all 10 semester units of ethics study in financial statement auditing courses, if the course title contains the word “auditing.” However, this will be reduced to seven semester units on January 1, 2017, when the minimum of three semester or four quarter units in accounting ethics or accountants' professional responsibilities becomes effective.”
