CPA Certificate and License Timeframe for CT

    Hey everyone,

I just recently put together my application package (verification application in a sealed envelope from my employer, sealed envelope transcripts from my colleges, license fee etc), and mailed it out certified mail (with signature requested) on August 11th. And it was already received and signed for by Department of Consumer Protection on August 13th.

So of course I have been checking the “verify license” page of the DCP’s site religiously…but so far nothing is coming up.

My question is for those who went through this application process in CT recently, what is the average time frame it takes CT to process and approve my application? And how would they communicate with me their decision or if they have any questions? Like yes I know I put my address down and email on the paper application but do they contact you directly or do you have to call to follow up?

And on the DCP it states that you have to order your wall certificate through the AICPA store once you get approved from the state of CT. Does anybody have any experience with this part as well that they can shed some light on this process?

I honestly think that this cpa license application process can be a bit more efficient. They should let you create a portal where you fill out the initial application, and then as you mail out your transcripts and work experience verification documents, the online account can reflect that..this way the applicant will know exactly what is missing and what has been received…instead of just waiting day in and day out hoping (and praying) that they received everything and that nothing is missing. Like come on the darn license fee is $300 …I’m sure they can allocate a portion of it to create a portal account of some sort.

Anyways sorry about the little rant…any advice or shared experiences will help me tremendously.

Stay safe and stay well everyone,

I'm not there yet so I'm not sure of the time frame, but I hear it's gotten faster. I know some of my coworkers waited three months before they heard something. I thinks down to a month now but don't quote me on that.

    Thanks @ Mick.

I actually received an email today from the Department of Consumer Protection acknowledging that they in fact have received my application. They make it very clear in the email that my application has not been reviewed / processed yet. And at the end the email states to allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing the application.

The email pretty much answers everything I had questioned, plus they also say in the email that they will email me the status of my application once it is reviewed.

I will keep updating this post as my application progresses with DCP, hopefully this will help you and many other candidates out that are working on their license in the state of CT.

It is official guys, my license application has been accepted and processed by CT and I am OFFICIALLY a CPA!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy!

This was a very fast turnaround time in my opinion as far as applying for the license goes. As you know I mailed my application and all other required documents in ONE envelope to CT DCP on 8/11/2020 and they received it on 8/13/2020. Today is 8/21/2020, they were able to process, approve, and issue me my license in just a span of 8 days (2 of those days were weekends don't forget). That is very impressive especially during this pandemic where everybody is low staffed.

So let me share exactly what I did when I submitted everything DCP, maybe this will help somebody who is trying to get licensed in CT one day.

-I filled out the SBA-11 Form (initial application for license)
-mailed out the SBA-12 (experience verification) to my employer and told my employer to fill it out/sign it and mail it to me in a SEALED envelope.
-I also ordered all my transcripts from all my schools to be mailed to my house. I ordered TWO copies of each transcript, just so i can verify everything for myself.
    – I printed out a copy of my Certificate of Successful completion of the AICPA Ethics Exam

Once i had received my official transcripts, and experience verification letter, i put everything together. I put a full page divider in between each application and documents..for example.. the first page of my entire mailing states ”SBA-11 Form”..followed by the actual sba-11 form, then the next divider reads “SBA-12 Employer Verification in sealed envelope”,followed by the actual sealed envelope, then next divider page reads “Official College Transcripts” and below i list the multiple colleges that the transcripts are from..which of course are contained right after, and the final divider reads “AICPA Ethics Completion Certificate copy” followed by the actual copy of the certificate. Then I made a copy of everything i mailed out (without actually opening the official transcripts or the sealed envelope from my employer) and finally i just paper clipped a check for the initial fee to the front and binder clipped everything together as one, put it in a PRIORITY MAIL ENVELOPE, taped it all up and mailed it out with signature confirmation.

Maybe the way i organized my application submission in one bundle made it that much easier for them to process everything, who knows…but that is what i did and i got approved for my license in 8 days.

Best of luck to everyone out there.

Congratulations! Now go look at CPAVerify and marvel at how your name is finally listed. LOL Amazing! That is an impressively fast turnaround even by preCOVID standards. Mine here in Guam took over two months.

    thank you @ Mick & @ monikernc!!!

@ Mick, yes the ethics is all online, i really did not look if you could order the book still. I am sure you can, however with the book i heard you only get a certain number or re-tries, but with online you get unlimited..but don't quote me on that.

@islandmango yes i had that page open all day on my laptop!! :] and i couldn't imagine waiting that long for you to get your license, that is crazy!! I am still very impressed with how quickly CT was able to process my application..i feel like i should send them a gift basket, but then again i think they will be fine with the $300 license fee i just paid them…so i guess i can say $300 well spent 🙂
