Why I am so unfocused days before my FAR exam?

I have studied pretty hard for my FAR test. I was testing at 80 percent on most topics on Becker a week and a half ago. Moved to Wiley was scoring 80 percent on some topics 60 percent on others. Most of the Becker book is like light reading because of how many times I went over the material. I am probably weakest on journal entries due to the fact I have been out of accounting so long. I started going through the Encyclopedia of Journal Entry book and could barely put a dent in it. I honestly don’t know how to proceed because I am so unfocused. My mind is just wandering off in the middle of my studying. I am so unfocused I don’t even know if this post has a question in it.?

I will try to buckle down and review multiple choice questions and get my sh*t together. I am wondering if other people experience this kind of thing before exams. If you FAR on Monday how you would proceed? I really don’t have weak areas so to speak. I understand the concepts well and choke on the occasional computational problems in all areas.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Well, I don't want to give you false confidence but chances are you are well prepared by one and feeling like there is nothing left to cover – that's how I felt too. But of course I may be wrong since I don't really know you – that's my disclaimer 😉

I'd go over those topics where you got 60% on Wiley and take a blank piece of paper and write down major JE from memory. Hopefully it doesn't take you much time to remember how to book cash or expenses, etc.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

Since I haven't taken FAR and many Sims I am picturing crazy journey entries.

I understand A=L+E ,debit expenses and losses, and credit gains and revenues. I just am overwhelmed having my huge book of journal entries and the many possibilities that can be tested.

A lot of the subjects I scored 60 percent on with Wiley were my strongest subjects on Becker. I know I want to review IFRS. Other than that I don't have a final review plan.

How long have you been preparing for FAR? Are you working full time?

@ amordiva : I quit my job in retail to study full-time. I have spent 2 months studying for FAR. My first month was pretty much all book reading, lectures, and flash cards. I then started to have a more balanced study routine my last month with multiple choice questions getting mixed in. I feel like I studying wrong for FAR in a lot a ways but due to the time I spent on this exam I understand much of the material. I got thrown off a few day ago because I got a cold and my mental endurance has been off since then.

@ tough kitty : I like that list of topics. I think i was over thinking what level of journal entries I need to understand. I will just do what is in Becker. I started the day with this image of me doing 1000's of journal entries only to find out how time consuming they could be. I also found myself day dreaming as my hand kept doing journal entries. I would love to find out if I have ADD or maybe my brain is just lazy because I worked 5 years in a mindless job and played video games on the side. Unfortunately I don't have money or insurance to see a doctor to get tested for ADD. I also don't like the idea of being dependent on some drug.Srry ADD rant came from ADD brain.

Agree with tough_kitty. I think you're ready for this test today so the studying doesn't seem as important.

I didn't feel the same way when studying though… My mind would wander during BEC study, but a couple of days before the exam, I felt the opposite of you where “OMG why was I daydreaming instead of studying the test is in a few days oh no” kind of thing.

If my test were on Monday, I'd review review review until the night before. Then go to bed early on Sunday.

    Good luck on your exam!

    REG 10/12/13 - 94
    FAR 10/17/13 - 93
    AUD 11/11/13 - 92
    BEC 11/20/13 - 87
    ethics 11/27/13 - 92%
