Why can't you retake the same section in the same window?

Just a quick vent…but I don’t understand why the aicpa doesn’t let you take the same section in the same window. If everyone apparently gets a different exam, then what’s the big deal? Unless they are administering the same exam in each window, right?

I assume they just want to make it harder to pass all 4 in the 18 month window.

I don't think that's accurate — I believe there's only a limited number of identical testlets utilized each quarter. When the AICPA was “promoting” the then-upcoming current exam three years ago, in response to candidate questions, they said that the next generation exam will utilize question pools (implying that they currently don't, which isn't surprising given the old school technology used to deliver the exam) and therefore they are considering letting candidates sit multiple times per quarter. Of course, it'll be the mid-2020s – at the earliest – before the next generation exam is released…

@Tnccincy – Seems like they'd make more money by letting us sit multiple times per quarter. Most people fail because they're not adequately prepared; while retaking the exam will benefit a faction of test takers on the fringe of passing, I suspect it'll increase the number of fails…

They have to do score releases more often for that to happen. It does not make much sense to retake an exam if you may have passed it the first time. After that, you have to refile for an NTS, which could take up the rest of the window anyway, depending on the state.

I think it is one of those things they have always done, with the current format, so they are sticking with it.

    FAR - 10/3/16
    BEC - 69 - 10/31/16
    AUD - November 2016
    REG - December 2016

They are currently looking into allowing continuous testing. The UAA and some boards are implementing changes to facilitate this, with a hopeful launch in 2020. The change would be such that you can take an exam multiple times in one window, so long as you have received your score.

“Candidates want to be able to test more often, with no dark testing periods, NASBA Executive Vice President and COO Colleen Conrad told the meeting, and the AICPA, Prometric and NASBA have determined continuous testing is feasible. The CBT Committee polled the State Boards’ executive directors to determine if they could be ready for continuous testing on January 1, 2020. The Model Rule being exposed for comment was developed in response to that poll’s results. Almost every state will have to change a rule or a statute to make continuous testing possible, she acknowledged.”
