I studied finance in both undergrad and my MBA program. Right now, I am looking to take the CPA Exam and am wondering how to choose which state to take the exam in. Do you have to take it in the state you plan on working in or can you take it in any state? I have 150 hours of business education, but I do not think I have the accounting specific hours required in Indiana (where I currently work). Can someone point me in the right direction?

You should take the test in the state where you are planning to work….

Having said that, I live in FL, but applying thru VA. In order to be able to sit in FL I was in need of 5 classes, and in VA I needed 2. I took the classes last year, now working on the exam, and later will take care of the 3 classes’ pending so I can use my CPA in FL.

VA personnel is very helpful, you can also download an “auto evaluation” from their website.

    Done 😉

I was 3 hours short of being eligible to sit in AL so I am sitting under GA law. I am taking a tax class now while studying for REG to finish up my hours and when I am done, I will transfer my exam credits back to AL and send them my transcripts to get licensed. It is really no different except I pay money to GA instead of AL and there will be a fee from both states to transfer my exam credits. The Accounting Chair at my alma mater recommended that I do this and said that they recommend it to grad students who are ready to sit but don't qualify under AL law yet. From what I can tell, it's not too unusual.

Check out the GA requirements. The way they have it structured, it looks like they allow you to take the exam well before you finish all your classes to be eligible for your license. In AL, the requirements to sit and get licensed are the same.
