Which masters degree to take to get accounting internship?!

I haven’t gotten an internship yet, but I am about to enter graduate school. I really want to get a Big 4 or other accounting internship (to get the 1 yr accounting experience for CPA). Otherwise, my CPA test struggles would have been in vain.

Would a MBA get hired as fast as a Master of Accountancy degree with the Big 4? Also, some of the prestigious schools I want to apply for don’t even have MA programs. So, I’m not sure what to pursue. I really want to get a job that will get me the CPA experience. Otherwise, what a waste of 5+ months this all would have been.

    Thank you ahead of time~!

It all depends on the university and what the firms are looking for. In my own experience, the firms looked specifically for Masters of Accountancy students, but the MBA students were also considered.

The thing is, with the Macc, you're “in the loop” accounting-wise. The majority of your classes are accounting, and thus your classmates and professors are all proabably accounting. As a result, just by proximity, it might be easier to network and get the feel of what the firms look for.

In the end though, there are other ways to network (like volunteering, recruiting events, student business/accounting organizations).

If I were you, I would try to talk to someone in the know, and see which degree is more coveted at the specific university you are looking for.

Im somewhat in the same boat. I researched the same qn & the impression i got from this forum was MBA has an edge bcoz they assume the Macc is just for 150 rule sake. Hope somebody with big 4 experience can chip in…

It is definitely possible to get a winter internship by entering a MS program. Make sure you select a school that is definitely a target school for the Big 4. I know plenty of people that were unemployed the day they graduated undergrad.. enrolled in a MS program and are now 150, almost finished with their CPA exams, and starting full time in the late summer/fall. MS of accounting is usually a 1 yr program, whereas MBA will be much longer. You're better off going MS unless you have been employed.
