I found out beginning of December that I got a 67 on FAR. I was hoping to pass and be able to take a much needed 2 months break before starting REG, which was to be my last exam. With the craziness of December (month end close, work closing for 2 weeks, moving into a new apartment, oh! and a perfectly timed breakup of a 1.5 year relationship), I’m back to studying…well, sort of.

I was going to use Dec 26th – Jan. 5th to really study day and night while I am off of work but I find it very difficult to get focused after the breakup. I’m unsure whether I should retake my exam Jan. 13th or the 27th, but with my focus being elsewhere, I’m not even sure I can do it in the month of January.

I’m sure many of you have experienced hardships during studying that made it very difficult to stay focused…what helped you get through it and get focused again? I’ve been studying for a year already and have passed BEC and AUD and I’d hate to retake FAR and fail again.

I'm the same boat! I'm restudying for FAR now and finding it very difficult to concentrate because of the holidays. When I studied for FAR the first time around my boyfriend and I broke up and no surprised, I failed FAR. I got so mad and studied day and night for 3 weeks for audit and passed. What keeps me motivated is what other members of A71 have said which I'll share. We are one exam away from almost being done! We are halfway there! I actually just got sick this Friday so the motivation to study is yet again waning but just keep thinking come end of January after a re-take you could be one exam away from being a CPA 🙂

@CPApache I can understand how difficult it be to stay motivated when life is happening around you. When I started studying for the CPA I was in school, focused and flying through the exams.

It wasn't until I started studying for BEC (my last exam) that things went downhill fast. I was working 45-55 hours a week, having troubles at work with my coworkers, and the stress was taking its toll. The weekend before I went to take my exam I landed in the ER with pneumonia. I was able to get an extension for my NTS and reschedule, but I was felt so tired, stressed, and defeated I had an F-it attitude and didn't focus on my studies. I ended up getting a 74….

Between that day and the next time I retook BEC, I moved out of my parents and changed jobs. I was again stressed with all of the new changes and unable to focus. Not making the proper commitment to my studies, I ended up with a 66…

Now two months later I still felt defeated and just fed up with the time I have wasted on this one section. I still am working full time, approaching busy season, and am on-off sick. But I am finally full committed to this exam and finally putting it past me.

Anyways, the point of my long rambles is I'm going to tell you what I wish I could go back and tell myself 7 months ago.

I know you are hurting, I know you are stressed out, I know you would rather do anything than study right now, But what I also know is that life never gets simpler. There will always be something, be it a break up, a work issue, moving, family/friend drama, holidays, or vacation plans. There will always be a distraction, there will always be stress, there will always be a “reason” why you shouldn't/can't study at that moment. What you need to decide is if in that moment is a day or two of not studying worth the next 6 months of your life? Because it is so simple for one decision to not to study or focus to turn into 2 failed attempts and months of only half living your life!

Believe me find your inner strength, grab some chocolate, cry a little, then get up set a study schedule and DO IT!!! Because I know you can!!!! You will be 100 times stronger and grateful when you pass next month and put this section behind you, do not focus on the short term, but the long term!!!

Sorry for the really long post, writing it motivates myself so I hope it helps you even a little bit! : ) Good Luck!

I passed FAR,REG, and got a 74 in Audit 6 years ago. As I was getting ready to take Audit again, my ex wife wanted a divorce. To make a long story short, I lost focus and here Im again after 6 years starting all over again. Whatever you do, stay away from dating sites.

I don't know if you think the same way that I do, but I always feel that a break-up is an opportunity to use the time and energy you were putting into the relationship to work on and better yourself. Think of studying for the exam as something that you're truly doing for yourself – for your future – and hit the books! In a few months, when the heartache is gone, I'm confident you'll be extremely glad you did.

Sometimes we just have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, remember to breathe in and out, and put one foot in front of other…. even when it hurts. So, give yourself the extra days to study if you think it will help, but don't give up! Best of luck to you.

What have I gotten myself into?

Thank you for all the wise words!

It's all stuff I know that should be done, but it's nice to hear that people can relate. My ex passed his CPA exams in November and we were doing this together, so without that support I always knew, going into this retake with everything that's going on is a little scary…

Independence is my theme for 2014, I mean, I did assemble most of my furniture in my apartment myself…so for a woman that has to count for something, right? 🙂
