What does a score of 75 mean?

I know that the scores on FAR, AUG, and REG are not simply the % correct answers you got, which is obvious because they all have written components and scale up if you get harder MC testlets. But is the % correct still the starting point for your score, which is then adjusted for sims and difficulty? Meaning if you got all easy testlets and got 75% correct on those plus did exactly average on the sim, then do you score 75?

Basically I’m just curious because I have the Wiley review books and I really don’t know how to grade myself on the practice tests. I’ve been getting mostly low 80s, but not sure how that correlates to the actual test score.

It has NOTHING to do with the % correct, it is not even a starting point. From my understanding a candidate walks into the test center with a 0 and for each correct question the get a designated number of points. I believe they break out the max available amount of points for certain sections. Example. max points = 100, MCQ will be worth a max of 70 points (70% of total grade) and 30 for Sims, 10 of which is WC.

Furthermore, the points are given based on the level of difficulty of the question, two levels – medium difficult and difficult. say 1 pt and 2 pts respectively for MCQ's. Thus the disadvantage of getting an easy testlet is that there are less 2 pt questions, but there will still be some… it minimizes the chances of getting the max points thats all… Hope this helps, and this is just my opinion and could very easily be completely wrong.

    BEC: 73,81(7/6/2010); AUD: 75(5/24/2010); FAR: 76(8/31/2010); REG: 77 (10/18/2010) - DONE!!!!

Nobody knows really how the testing scoring works although the AICPA has released a booklet on it, and it's pretty easy to find (but I'm feeling to lazy to find it for you right now). Basically it's per question, and based on the difficulty of the question if you get a hard question right you get more points, an easier question will get you less points. It's hard to pass with all medium testlets, but possible. You just have to get a whole lot of questions right since they are worth less points. The simulations are graded a lot different and they don't really release information on how they grade the sims. The written communications are the same way. Some people think that those are partially computer graded and some people are under the impression they are completely by hand….

So those are the “facts” as I know them (or at least the general consensus).

    My OPINION is that….

It's basically how you do compared to other people since a “hard” question is denoted by a lot of others getting it wrong. So if you're doing as well as most other people who end up passing in your wiley practice exams than you're good :). For example, I scored upper 70's to mid 80's on my Becker final progress test so I'd expect others who scored around the same to pass. So, 80's sounds good to me, though I don't know about Wiley vs. Becker so someone else could chime in here 🙂

Like I said that last paragraph is just opinion 😀

    FAR-91 (7/29)
    AUD-99 (8/23)
    BEC-90 (10/1)
    REG-99 (11/3)

I have done both Wiley and Becker questions – a bit of an overkill – and I can tell you a lot of the questions overlap. In my opinion getting low 80s in the Wiley book practice tests is not enough to test.

If you can score 80s preferably mid 80s on a random sample of 90 questions in the Wiley book, then you have a good chance of passing… again in my opinion.

    DONE!

What does a score of 75 mean? For me it means if I can add one more 75 in REG with my 75 in both Audit and Far, and my 76 in BEC I will be a CPA. I know thats not exactly what you were asking but thats all that matters. 75=CPA

Just one edit Trevor, 100 isn't possible, 99 is the highest score 🙂

    AUD- 74, 81, BEC - 73,82, FAR-82, REG- 77, and DONE!
