From the people that passed FAR on their first attempt, would you reccoment watching all the lectures first then doing the MCQ’s? Or MCQ’s after each lecture??

    Thanks for your input!

I barely passed FAR, but in my opinion, if you watch all the lectures before doing anything else, you will be very confused. IMO, I would treat each chapter of FAR like a project. Not moving on to the next project until you've completed the first project. Complete each chapter in it's entirety, watch the lecture, re read the chapter, then work the MCQs for that chapter, before moving on. If you watch 30+ hours of FAR lectures, then tried to jump into the material, you might possibly lose all of your hair–seriously.

    AUD 81 (X4) Previous scores 59, 72, 72
    REG 80 (X3) Previous scores 59, 60
    FAR 75 (X2) Previous score 67
    BEC 79 (X2) Previous score 58

Those were my thoughts, but I hear a lot of people watch all of the lectures so they have much more time for MCQ's. I am on F3 in becker, and can barely remember the stuff in F1. Ill only have 1.5 weeks to review, so I need to make sure I have a great grasp on the MCQ's!

Lecture, MCQ, Lecture, MCQ. Rinse and repeat.

I would say it would be more helpful to do MCQs after each lecture b/c it helps you to understand the material better.

Although I agree that this sounds logical and has worked for many, I personally did not find that lectures, mcqs, lectures, mcqs…worked well for me. FAR was my first one and I watched the lectures, read the book and did mcqs for each part, one part at a time. I found that the lectures slowed me down a great deal and that I liked reading the book more.

After FAR, (if I recall correctly) I just tried watching all the lectures first (although following along in the book at the same time), to get them over with. Then I would go through the book and do the mcqs, section by section. I found this method helped me more because although I liked the lectures least, I did not want to forego them. So I made myself go through them first to get them over with, and then when I read the book/did mcqs, the material was a bit familiar to me.

When I took BEC for the second time, I purchased another course's review/cram lectures/book and watched part of the lecture. It was a different style than the lectures I had been listening to until then, and it could be that if I had used that company's review material to begin with I would have done as the others recommend.

I think this depends on the person and the study material…

I used Becker and was very happy with it. I think I am just the type of person who likes to read things over a couple of times in order to “get it”. So I was kind of impatient to get through the lectures so I could finally be up to reading the book and doing mcqs. But I didn't want to miss out on anything by not watching the lectures, either.

Also, when I studied FAR it was during tax season and by the time I came home from work I was very tired. I generally watched the lectures at night and the fact that my mind was not alert like earlier in the day did not help. Perhaps, in actuality (time-wise), the lectures did not really slow me down. Maybe it just felt that way because I was so tired from a long day at work.

At the recommendation of others, I bought Roger cram right before my second BEC exam, and together with the Becker material I went over a couple of topics I was still a bit confused about.

The way I did it was read, watch, re-read, MC questions. One section at a time. For the final review, I would re-read and do the MC questions which I missed or thought was challenging.

On your free time like while on your commute, I think it may be helpful to listen to the lectures over and over.

The above steps worked well for me.

@cpham4…I did exactly what you did for all my three tests I passed.

Here is my answer to the OP:

Read the book first before you listen to the lecture/live class. That way, you have an idea of what the lecture is all about. The lecture is quiet fast, and you won't be able to follow it without pre-read the materials. After the lectures, read the book again and start doing the MCQs…take as much time as you need until you understand the concepts, don't rush into next chapter just because you want to finish it fast. After that, re-read the book (by then, your learned knowledge allows you go thru the book way fast) and work on flagged questions…meanwhile, you are going to puke and burn your book, that is about the time you are ready for the test…

I hate watching lectures, especially after you finish the in lecture MCQ's and the instructor state “Welcome back gang, I hope you did really well on those questions.” We can't understand you Tim Gearty you are going through FAR way toooo fast! haha.

Do you guys try to get through the MCQ for the lecture without looking at the actual material until all questions are answered, or do you attack it like homework, refrencing the book when you get stuck?

@Whyme, I think for the easier material like cost recovery, completed contract method, etc., for me it was okay to just go through the homework and I would actually learn the material as I was doing the homework. For the harder material, I think you're best doing one question at a time and referring back to the book if you really don't understand it.

There's no point in going through all of the homework for the sake of going through the homework. Take your time and learn the material as you are doing the homework. One exception I allowed for myself was going shoot through the homework questions for material I did not learn yet. Ie: I was going through diluted eps questions without understanding it and for me it was okay because I knew I would learn that concept later during the course and I can always revisit these questions once I have learned the material.

    Hope this helps!
