Took BEC – had a realization… - Page 2

My old study habits in college can’t help me pass this exam.

I studied BEC and became a jack of all trades. I knew the main points and the general concepts behind each section with a grasp of detail here and there.. but this didn’t cut it for me today. I should have studied harder and Mastered a handful of topics each chapter instead of loosely understanding them but I assumed I’d be okay. I really should have known better.

It was around 12 when I got my *** handled to me. Half of the stuff I seen was way way more complicated than I anticipated. And when I say the questions were complicated I mean they were layered concept. I got a question where I had to determine the effects of technology risk to lebron’s hairline to cost of debt to why danica patrick never smiles.. its was that hard. Wasn’t fun at all.. there was little opportunity to eliminate answers.

Another thing is the calculations… I didn’t know some of the formulas COLD. 2-3 formulas I skipped studying because I told myself it won’t show up  and I should have did more practice on calculating variable/absorption costing, direct/step method, etc. Next time I’m going to work the calculations backwards and inside out in case the exam ask me in a different way.

My testlet difficulty level: HARD, easy, medium.

The first testlet completely had me really conflicted. I thought it was suppose to be easy from what I’ve read on these boards.. this sucka was pretty sick.

The second testlet’s difficulty level dropped down to the basics… this is when I knew I bombed the first testlet…

I got one question that asked me ‘what was my favorite color’… it was that bad.

At this point I kept thinking about the change in difficulty level from 1 to 2.

My mind was not in a good place going into testlet three.

But testlet three wasn’t too bad. Had a mixture of medium, hard, and easy questions.

The WC wasn’t bad at all. I actually had fun doing them.

I’m not going to look at my score next week. I’m going to start on my next section.

Anyway, thats it for my experience. if you’re taking BEC soon goodluck and don’t underestimate this thing.

@caliguy, I know that feel bro. we are so screwed when we take REG haha… richard is cool as hell but I passed both classes strictly using google :bertface. Anywho here are a couple things I would have done differently…

First, there is going to be two internship opportunities with the BOE as a accounting assistant and something else I forget. I think its only open to seniors. They should have it towards the end of Spring or Fall 2012. The pay is minimal but you'll get a chance to interview for the tax position after its done. You really can't afford to miss this opportunity… make sure you submit your app. on time and prep for the interview… you'll get it… everyone does. If the dates don't fall within your time frame of grad… you might consider postponing to get this chance. Most of my friends (who are older) are now tax auditors. I honestly didn't want to go the gov. route but now maybe I should have I donno.

Second, check torojobs at least once a day. This is how I found my job after grad. I didn't do the BOE internship because I got distracted by the womenz. But the last month before grad I did my daily searching torojobs, indeed, and craigslist everyday once a day. Have your resume ready to submit. Torojobs has a bunch of sales and marketing internships… I'd take a look at them but those are last resort type things.

And last… you could always transfer out. Go to fullerton or long beach if possible. I know two peeps who did this. One went to long beach and the other to los angeles. Even if it pushes your grad date back trust me it'll be worth it. I had the chance to go to fullerton but I thought the drive wasn't going to be worth it… I cock slap myself every morning thinking how dumb I was. I should have put this as number 1… if you have two more semesters or even one do yourself a big favor and do some research on other schools and transfer… who cares about doing one extra semester.

Hit me up man if you want to more clarity… or need more insight.

@Roach I took cost account nearly 5 years ago, and Becker did not cover anything relating to the step method in the 2012 material. What a shame.

@ Roach First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my questions. I need all the advice that I can get. I did applied for the BOE internship, but sadly, I did not get the position for this spring. This semester they had a bunch of people applied and I actually have 5 people that I know who also applied and they did not get it either. This was for the spring semester internship, so I guess I will apply for the BOE summer intern. How exactly does the transferring works? These are the classes I have left Acc 331 Intermediate Accounting II, Management 490, Law 340, Acc 339, and GE f1. How many classes did your friend have to take when he transferred to Long Beach State? I don't think I would be able to make it at Long Beach State or Fullerton for Intermediate Accounting II, because our school did poorly in teaching. Besides, at Long Beach State, they are required to take Calculus which I never took since CSUDH did not require it. If you can, try and ask your friend what other classes he had to take at Long Beach State when he transfer.

@Cali, transferring from CSU to CSU is different than a JC to CSU. Once your in the CSU system you can transfer from school to school from my understanding. My friends were both in their junior and senior year. So I think you should be good to transfer minus the biz cal class. Just take it during the summer or during your first semester. And don't worry about Accounting II… its the same everywhere. I would put a lot of focus on that class and ACC 339 either way if you plan to sit for the CPA. I don't think you have much time so you need to do your research quick. Head to LB if you can't find info online.

@ Roach I think the deadline is way over for transfer. They only accept application for transfer during late fall. I checked CSU mentor and CSULB application is closed. Did your friends transfer out after their fall semester? I am sure they did it during their fall semester and not spring. By the way, what is GOOGLE BERTFACE? Maybe I can use it since I am taking Acct 433 Tax II.

@Whyme Step method is the method of allocating service department's costs to other service departments, as well as to operating departments, in a sequential manner. The sequence typically starts with the service department that provides the greatest amount of service to other departments.

Cindy Simpson covers this “beautifully in (Yeager) I did not see it in Becker I have both.

Haha, it was some kind of miracle I swear. I guessed on nearly half of the exam. For audit, I breezed through the MCQ's and thought I nailed that one, I guess what they say is true, if you think you passed think again, but if you think you failed you are good to go!
