Tips on Studying for FAR in 6 Weeks

I just started studying for FAR yesterday with my exam scheduled for July 14th. I’m using Becker Self-Study and am wondering the most effective way to approach studying for this section in the amount of time I’ve given myself. I’ve taken AUD and REG so far. I passed AUD by watching the Becker lectures, drilling MCQ’s, and taking notes while doing the practice problems, but I only scored a 78, so that leaves me wondering if this approach is good enough for FAR. I’ve never really gone back to review the book after watching the lectures, just done problems over and over again.

I’m just wondering what everyone else has done to prepare for FAR because I’m getting discouraged walking out of the exams feeling like I failed. Keep in mind that even though I have 6 weeks to prepare, I’m treating this as a full time job while I wait for my start date in August. Thanks.

    AUD - 78
    REG - 76
    FAR - 82
    BEC - 80

If i remember right FAR with becker was over a 2 month period (8 weeks). They would do 2 lectures a week, and homework for days not in class. The best thing for FAR which to me is the hardest exam is practice the questions and sims. Some sims can look nothing like the mcq. Make sure you understand the book to tax differences, depreciation, and the financial statements.

    Good Luck!

BEC: 75 lost credit, could not pass far 🙁
AUD: 76 lost credit could not pass far 🙁
FAR: 74, FML. Next exam 06/14/23
REG: 75 lost credit could not pass far 🙁

Everyone walks out of the test thinking they failed. That's normal.

Skip 6 and 10. Kidding sort of. I knew pensions pretty well from my day job so it was a quick review through that chapter.

Focus extra on NFP and Governmental as its heavily tested. Also focus on knowing the debits and credits for transactions related to the topics as they will show up in the SIMS.

FAR has the worst reputation, but it is managable if you break it down.

    AUD - 90
    FAR - 71, 76
    REG - 75
    BEC - 76 (bubble sucks)

My study method using Becker was:

    1) Watch the lecture and copy down all of the notes presented

    2) Read the the book with the notes you just added from the lectures

    3) Complete the multiple choice homework related to the section you just read (closed-book!)

    4) After all chapter lectures & MC homework are completed, do the task based simulation homework.

It's also a really good idea to write out your work when tackling the homework. Don't just punch a calculation into the calculator or do the math in your head – write it out and/or do the related journal entries.I strongly feel that writing out your work reinforces what you have learned especially when it comes to journal entries on the TBS section of the exam.

    Good luck!

    FAR -- 88 (4/21/15)
    AUD -- 94 (7/20/15)
    BEC -- 85 (8/13/15)
    REG -- 85 (10/20/15)

    I'm done!

Like I just told the other fella in another post.

Don't work MCQs until you get them right, work them until you don't get them wrong! That's what help me retain a lot of information.
