Thinking of switching to Yaeger CPA Review for FAR, input would be appreciated!

I’ve used Roger CPA review so far and have passed Aud and Reg on my first try, and am currently studying for Far. However, my Roger review expires next month (due to the 9 month restriction) and I’m thinking of trying Yaeger for FAR just because so many people rave about it. I do enjoy Roger and feel like he breaks up topics into manageable pieces, explains well (although very fast, but you can always rewind!) and I do like his corny jokes:) However, I really need to pass FAR on my first shot and anticipate having 1.5 months almost free (I’m taking 3 graduate tax courses) do you think I’d be better off with Yaeger, since people on this forum say Yaeger goes over a lot more Wiley q’s and has more of a teaching approach..? Please advice!!

Yaeger has been awesome for me. Passed FAR and AUD on my first try and just sat for REG. But honestly, I would stick to whatever has been working for you. I think any review course you pick and you've had success with would be a good choice.

    Thanks MDCPA,

While I am really comfortable with Roger, it would be nice to have someone walk me through a few mcq's atleast for FAR….it takes me FOREVER to get through the mcq's in Wiley by myself the first time around, I've just heard so many people rave about Yaeger that I thought I'd give it a shot! Now I'm thinking I'll try Yaeger if I don't pass FAR this first time around. If anyone else has taken Roger/Yaeger for FAR please share your experience.

    Thanks!

I recommend Yaeger. Phil and Cindy are pretty good at what they do. Wannabetxacctnt, can you tell me about your experience with REG? I took it last month and I struggled with it. I found it hard to recall all of the little execptions and rules. Walked out of there feeling not so confident.

I wish I asked the same question before switching to Yaeger for FAR section. Everyone learns differently. I used Roger CPA review last year and passed three sections. I really enjoyed his lectures, they were fun and energetic. My Roger materials were very old (since 2008), so I had to order a new review for 2011. Since I read many good comments here about Yaeger for FAR, I ordered it back in December. I am a little dissapointed with it though. This lecture type teaching style is not for me. I just don't have a lot of time to listen to all their lectures and have to fast forward some of their video material. I am afraid I maybe skipping something important. Roger was giving me a very good summary and understanding of complex topics which I was supplementing with Wiley's MCQ and text when needed. Yaeger instructors are reading a lot of materials mainly from Wiley text book which I prefer to read myself, so for me it's like a waste of time. However, I do like them going over some difficult MCQ & simulations. Listen to their sample videos and see if you like it. It's too late now for me to order Roger's new materials since I am scheduled to sit for FAR at the end of month.

Thanks Haze Eastwood, hopefully I'll decide which review course I'm going to go with for FAR by this weekend. I didn't struggle too much for Reg because I'm getting my masters in tax and so was very familiar with all the corp, partnership, estate/gift and indv tax stuff, however the business law stuff was information overload. I crammed all the fed security regulation stuff and blew off a LOT of other stuff like agency, commercial paper and what not..I found my exam to be mostly fair. The first testlet was easy, but the second one was craaazy hard and I wasted a lot of time on it. The third one was similar to the first and the sims were all on the exact same topic and very challenging because I had to keep flipping b/w tabs..I finished the exam with 20 seconds to spare and felt I had just ran a marathon. I felt I had a decent shot at passing, because I was comfortable with tax and I was fortunate to not get too many business law q's that stumped me. Overall I do feel like the Reg exam may be curved the most but I'm not sure…

The more you analyze your performance on these exams, the worse you feel..I suggest you take it easy till the scores come out!

Thanks wannabetxacctnt, what about Auditing? Seemed simple at first but I am struggling with the business cycle portion. I have no clue how to answer questions like what procedure would the auditor most likely use to whatever? Does Roger do a good job at explaining this?

    Hi Haze Eastwood,

I really like Roger's teaching style and found him to very very effective for Aud. He used to be an auditor at Deloitte previously, so he obviously knows what he's talking about. He gives you great mnemonics for Auditing which I found myself rattling off while doing the MCQ's. I studied 2 weeks for Aud approx 5-6 hours a day and passed it, I loved his Aud course, he is engaging and cuts the fat out, which is very helpful when you're hard pressed for time. You can call Roger and ask them to share Aud lectures on any specific topic that you're struggling with and they will give you access to view his lecture for upto 3 viewings. I do believe you can call and request them to increase your views if you need to do so. I also loved the way he made a pictoral diagram of all the opinions, that way as long as you remember the diagram you can remember ever single permutation of aud opinions.
