Texas Application of Intent

I moved from Michigan to Texas and I am in the process of putting my application of intent together. I did not took the additional educational requirements of ethics and business communication that the Texas Board requires. I took a class in Professional Issues that covers a great deal of ethics as well as writing. I had my professor write a letter to confirm this and I also have a syllabus available to send with my packet.

What is the chance that my application will be approved? Is going back to school my last resort? I am currently studying for FAR and would really like to be able to sit for the exam by the beginning of April.

It will be up to the Board to determine if said course meets their standards. You will need to wait on their response. With that said, if there was a heavy ethics focus in that course, chances are it will be approved. At the very least, you could look up the most inexpensive and leastly costly course that they approve and take it online or at a JC. Best wishes.

This is my area of expertise: I had a similar issue and resolved it in my favor. Things to be aware of:

    1. The Board passes the buck on this issue, saying it is up to the school to determine if the course fulfills the requirements, then shoot it down if necessary. If you view their listing you will see it has no consistency between colleges. Since your professor is supporting you, you may have already won this battle.

    2. You may have to escalate to your schools Dean/Chairman of the accounting program if they reject the professors letter. I would feel optimistic about the Chairman/Dean helping since the professor is helping.

    3. If the board rejects the letter and your school drops the ball, prepare for a long correspondence war with the state board. Prepare a letter to your contact at the state board and Director Hiller laying out your position logically, with reference to the syllabus and classes.

    4. Look at the bylaws. I believe one class can't provide 2 hours of credit for both ethics and writing. You might need to root around for another writing class. I noticed that senior business capstone courses have been used for writing before.

    5. Consider becoming a CPA in Michigan and applying for reciprocity here?

In conclusion, since it seems like your school is on your side, try to work with them for them to submit courses that would fulfill Texas requirements. WARNING: the State Board does not accept lower division courses to fulfill this requirement, so that could also screw you. But, don't give up easily. Make them categorically deny you.

Good luck. Business Communicate the shit out them.

I am also in the process of relocating to Texas, but in my case, I have completed the CPA Exams. I just realized that Texas requires you to have completed 3 hours of the ethics course from an accredited university prior to sitting for the exams. The problem is I did not do the ethics course in college, because it is not a requirement in the state that I originally registered in. Is it too late to enroll in such a class? Do you by chance know of anybody that has had a similar issue and had it resolved?
