I’m pretty nervous, as expected but I know I’ve prepared a lot since I’ve been studying since late January so I just hope I’ve done more than the other candidates sitting this window. I wanted to ask what your test day tactics are, for instance I’ve heard people say not to get too hung up on a question you’re unsure of. What is the maximum time that you personally will spend on a question? Thanks everyone for all your support, and Happy Easter- I hope you are all enjoying some time with your families today!

On FAR, I was so worried about running out of time that I actually finished over an hour early! After the exam, I was so nervous that I failed because I went too fast. So, I recommend writing down a time budget on your scratch paper before you start the exam (ex. Testlet 1: 3:20 Testlet 2: 2:35, etc). During the exam, just keep your time budget in mind. If you have trouble with a question, flag it and move on. After you are done all the questions in the testlet, go to your flags and, if you have time left in your budget, try to work them through. Do not let yourself get flustered by a question – flag it, forget about it, and move on. Remember, the question could be pretest!

Also, before I leave a testlet, if I have time, I will just run through all the questions and make sure I have the answers filled in because I have OCD worries that I left questions blank :).

Sorry, I can't tell you how much time per question because I never have tracked that. But, stay positive and relaxed and you will be fine! Good luck!

I have to write at the top of the scratch paper RTFQ. That reminds me to read the question, figure out what they are asking me to do and work the problem without wasting time getting an answer that has absolutely nothing to do with the question. Don't forget your soft ear-plugs! I forgot mine once and I swear the person at the computer next to me was taking a speed typing test for 4 hours. The noise was so distracting! Good Luck tomorrow!

@ledgermaven, I will definitely try to keep it together and not panic haha half of it is the FAR itself, and the other half is that it's my first CPA exam

@amccpa, that's a really good idea! I want to worry as little as possible about mentally thinking about my timing so I will write it down and try my best to stick to the plan! You've done so well on the exams, congratulations!

@kricket, I will definitely pay close attention to the questions because I've noticed in my practice that I jump to an assumption of what it's asking me and then waste time so I will be much more careful! Do they provide you with the soft ear plugs? When I took the GMAT, they had them at the prometric center.

@ Minimorty, that is definitely the plan! 🙂

Prometric has some head phone things that you can use, but I wouldn't advise it. They are painful, don't work and you don't know who had them on before you. Go to Wal-greens or CVS and ask for them. I found them in the same area as the swimmers ear plugs. You can get a box of a like 10 or 15 pair really cheap. You are allowed to take two earplugs into the exam. Good Luck to you and I'll be thinking about you tomorrow!

Thank you so much! I'll pick some up today, and yes I know those headphone things you're talking about, I felt like they were squeezing my head together during the GMAT lol!

Good luck! I try to go:

    Testlet 1 – 4:00 – 3:15

    Testlet 2 – 3:15 – 2:30

    Testlet 3 – 2:30 – 1:45

    Testlet 4 – 1:45 – 0

Bathroom breaks take much longer than anticipated because you will have to sign out and in, and there might be people ahead of you.

You're gonna be fine, MG! My day before/day of technique is to chillax. I don't like to cram the day before or the day of…stresses me out. I would say just approach each question calmly and clear your mind. Focus on one question at a time; don't think about the exam as a whole or your time limit, etc. Just go in and destroy it!

Yeah one good thing about LA is it's easy to chill out when you need to, I spent a few hours reviewing some of my note cards and IFRS notes by the pool. And I think thats great advice BaseballCPA because I know it's really easy to start panicking like “what's the next testlet going to be like?!” “what about the SIMS!”. I'm in a surprisingly good mood today for someone who has felt nauseous and uneasy this whole week just thinking about it!

Good luck! Taking it on Tuesday. I plan on just reviewing my notes and not doing any MC. My ritual is to always have an ice cream cone the day before an exam. I'm taking my exam in Glendale so I plan on going to the Glendale Galleria and buy myself something nice after the exam 🙂

Don't get hung up on MCQs. The more time you leave for SIMS the better. Abuse the research tool.

Relax and get plenty of sleep. =)
