I am taking FAR in July and was looking for some advice? I started studying back in mid May and I am really hitting it hard. Going through the material in thirds. Doing chapter 1-3 and doing the homework twice, chapters 4-6 and doing homework twice, 7-9 and doing homework twice. Hoping to have all that done by the end of June. Then I will try and do the sims and practice tests during my last two weeks in addition to looking over the book again. Take the exam July 12th. Anyone not recommend this? Thanks!!

    Elsie,

I have only gone through the first four sections so I am not quite sure yet. Chapter 3 is bugging me a little bit, but I'm sure there will be more of that to follow. Going to finish up the chapter 4 homework tonight and maybe start the ch. 5 lecture. What chapters are giving you trouble?

Same boat here, only I just started with Becker Self Study and sit on July 9. I'm on L2. Sounds like you guys are way ahead of me!

Has anyone else noticed how often Gearty says the word “again” in his lectures? I'm tempted to start a friendly wager… Sometimes I think he pulls of an entire sentence where all he's said is “again, highlight, again…”

    Good luck everybody!

    Same boat here as well!

I got my Becker review today, installed it tonight and went through intro and actually did lecture 1 of F1, which I liked.

I don't have a date yet because I just finished two classes in order to meet the 24-ACCT-credit requirements and I have to wait for the school to send in the transcript in order to receive the ATT, pay NASBA and get a NTS. Hopefully this will take only 2-3 weeks and I will be able to schedule FAR for the second half of July.

I like your plan though and I plan to do something very similar.

Then I plan to schedule either REG or BEC at the end of August, depending on how my experience studying for FAR was…

    FAR - 7/26/10 - 95
    AUD - 8/10/10 - 88
    BEC - 8/31/10 - 88
    REG - 10/15/10 - 95

Yeah, I hope it works. For me, going through the lecture and the homework just builds a foundation. I need to go through the chapters and the homework a couple more times to really grasp it. Too bad there is so much material with this one! Ugh I'm praying that I passed BEC and that this beast is my last. Good luck to everyone! I'm telling you if you put in the time then you should not have a problem getting that passing score.

    @ avs193

    I join your prayers.

We are pretty much on the same boat. At the moment I passed REG and AUD, thank God. I also took BEC on May and will be taking FARE next window.

Your plan is pretty solid. I like the idea of separating the material in groups of 3.

I wish you and everyone else that took or is going to take the exam great success.

What do you guys think about a final review for FAR? I know Jeff has FAR notes available for download for about $20 that he recommends to help with final prep… but I'm such a sucker and am thinking about getting a final review package now. Has anyone here used a final review for another section or for FAR? What maker? Online, paper, in person?

(I'm plodding through FAR3 as I type this, which might explain my consideration of a final review…)

    Thanks!

Is anyone else about to burst into tears over Intercompany transactions? I remember this being a bear in my advanced financial reporting class, but I'm REALLY struggling with the homework from becker. Section F3. I've done ok and had some “read the stupid question moments” in other sections, but intercompany is not gelling with me… I'm super frustrated…

I always worked in the US for european companies that consolidated overseas and I dealt with intercompany transactions every time I issued financial statements.

I haven't got to that point (just finishing F2 in Becker as we speak), but I hope I won't be crying. That wouldn't be good. I haven't seen pensions throughout my career, so I save my tears for that… 🙂

    @lucylaw

I completely agree! Intercompany transactions are causing a lot of pain in my life right now. Also, for some reason, I can't seem to remember gross profit percentages at all. I just took REG and that seemed like a piece of cake compared to FAR. It's hard for me to believe I actually took 4 financial classes.

I am sitting on July 23 and I am using the Yaeger review. I have been looking at all the DVDs at once then doing the questions. Is that a good idea or should I do a few modules at a time? I am currently on module 16, but the good thing is that I still have time to switch up my study schedule and method. Any feedback is appreciated.

@ItalianCPA that experience should really help you. Keep us posted on what you think after F3…

@kellbell those gross profit percentages are a good thing to get down pat. They'll come right back at you in BEC. Just finished F4 and in reviewing F1&2 a little, I feel like F3 is tough in general. Hopefully we can make up for our weak points in other areas! I think I felt better about REG because I finished 2 semesters of tax courses and then sat as soon as I finished becker. Now I realized I haven't taken a solid GAAP class in about a year. Gave me some solid respect for those who come back to finish the exam after years of being out of school…

@NC_CPAwannabe I'm not familiar with yeager, but I like the retention I get after doing some of the questions within a day or two of following the lecture. Although it might work out better sitting through the lecture and then really relearning the material when you get back to the questions. I also tend to work through the questions twice (once closely following the lecture and then again in the 2 week review before the exam)

    Lucylaw,

    I'm at F4 now.

I “liked” F3, but, as I said, I always worked in foreign companies that consolidated several entities. FAS52 and consolidations (especially transactions with inventory) were nothing new to me.

Generally, I am feeling good about FAR, but I have two major doubts:

1- It's the first part I'm studying for and taking. Yes, I'm more familiar with FAR (as I always worked in industry as controller), but on the other hand I'm not sure if it's a good idea to start with such a beast, given that I have no idea how sitting at the exam is and how ready I should feel.

2- I'm scoring consistently between 80% and 90% in the Becker MCQs (both homework and supplemental), and thank God, I am gifted with a great “visual” memory, so I'm pretty sure I'll get them right when I see them again when I go over the material after I'm done with the lectures. Not sure if it's a good thing because I won't get the same Qs at the exam and I don't want to feel overconfident.

Oh well, I yet have to see pensions, government and NFP accounting, which I've never seen in my life….. I'm sure those will bring my confidence down…
