Study areas?

    So I have some irritating neighbors who “don’t care” that their music is loud all day every day. I kind of got into an argument with them today when I came home. They are truly a motivation “If pass and get a good job I get to move!!” That being said, where do you guys go to study if your home is not doable? The only hard part about this, is I have dogs, and I can’t just leave all day and never come home. The library is a few miles away. Are there any other places people go? Is there any other options? To give you an idea, my new work schedule will be 6:45-9am and 2-4pm and my work is 20 minutes one way from my home. I just have a hard time studying here. Their music gives me a headache, and sometimes my job too. Maybe I can stay longer at work in the morning, come home, and then leave earlier for my afternoon shift. Anyone do something different besides study at work or library?

    I doubt this will work for you since you have a job and responsibilities but I personally just switch my day upside down.

    mostly Study all night , sleep in the afternoon . saves me travel time to library or w/e

    That is good that works for you, but I think you are right about me. I would have a really difficult time trying to do that. Thanks for the suggestion though.

    To add, I have tried earplugs and they don't keep the bass out. My landlord won't do anything. I can't really have ear plugs in when I watch lectures. Just in case some one wondered about this.

    Have you tried noise cancelling earphones? They're kind of expensive, but they really do work. Bose makes a great pair!

    I turn my fan on FULL speed to keep the noise out. Weird solution, but it works for me:)

    Occasionally, I have the same problem. I live in an apartment, so, first, I get away from all the walls. If you have central air, switch the fan to the ‘on' position. I do this all the time when listening to the lectures. If I'm not listening to lectures, I use noise-canceling headphones when doing MCQs. And if I'm just reading out of the book, I go outside, away from everyone, and lay in the grass and read and take notes. Maybe you could also invest in a big box fan to drown out the noise.

    @Ashley

    I have a similar problem except the loud person is my boyfriend and the dogs. We do try to go to the library on the weekends but with a new puppy it is hard to keep her locked up for more than a couple of hours. I think going to work early or staying late is a great solution to your problem. I do the same thing. I get to my office early, don't take a lunch and stay late most days. Another thing I use to do when we just had 1 dog is go to the dog park. We have one near us that has a bar so we would get there and I would let my dog run around while I listened to lectures or whatever. When I finished my studying for the day, I would buy myself a beer and watch my dog plan before heading back home.

    When is your test? You are taking FAR correct? Well good luck! I am scheduled for REG on Saturday but am considering moving it back to mid-May. Just not sure I am ready…

    I live directly behind a bar that has a patio and blares horrible music from about 8pm-2am. I actually checked with the city code and when they blare music after 10pm, I could call the police and tell them to shut it off, but I don't want to be that d-bag that calls the cops for a bars music. Not to mention, it would be fairly obvious who called the police too. Now that the weather is nice they have turned the patio into an all out 14-hour a day hippie jam fest, even though there aren't more than 2 people on the patio at one time, if any. So I decided to order some $15 noise cancelling ear protection which I could also use for shooting once this CPA stuff is done (that was my justification for buying them). They get here on Thursday so hopefully it will help without being too uncomfortable.

    @Ashley Let me add this Disclaimer I am weird!!.. I have three kids, full-time job and hate to do anything on the weekends.

    Three days a week I wake up an hour and a half earlier and study, 5 days a week I study for 4 hours at work, on the weekend immediately after my runs I study for three hours at home. Everyone has to be sleep or this won't work. My noisy neighbors are my kids and husband and the only way they will fall asleep is if I fall asleep….So, in other words, I have to be completely out the house to be productive. About three days a week after work, I study in my CAR for an hour before I pick up my girls. I tried the library and I get distracted by the moving, the coughing, and the talking. I tried the coffee shop and bookstore and my mind drifts to why they have so many different coffees, what each one taste like, and how I would rather read books for leisure……Of all these different places my favorite study place is my car! It is quiet, no one to disturbe me!

    @Ashely,

    You should split your daily study time.

    I don't have dogs or crazy neighbors but have a 3 yrs old son and he is loud 😉

    I have followed ELL Plan, and it works magic for me. You just have to split your study time through the day. 1 hour in the morning, 1 hour at lunch and 1 or 2 hours in the evening after my son goes to sleep or my husband is in control of the bed time process, whichever happens first. On weekends I go to the library for 6 hours Saturdays and 4 hours Sunday. I try to put +/-20 hours per week, but you can adjust your hours based on your availability.

    Good suggestions everyone. I will look into noise canceling headphones or ear protection and see if they would work. The music is from my downstairs neighbor. I thought about my car too, but I was afraid it would start getting too hot soon with summer coming. I will try some of these out. Thank you.

    cpa_goal – the exam was everything I didn't want it to be. I didn't prepare as much as should/wanted to, and it will definitely show when I get my score. I don't think I was ready. I wrote a little about it in the FAR exam thread if you want to look at that.

    akb9874 – I am now studying for AUD starting today.

    If there is a college campus near you (and you are able to park there!) you might find some good places to study there besides the library. The 3 business schools I've attended all have quiet study rooms – the key is to get there early enough to snag one. Although that should be easier in the summer.

    I know how frustrating it is to have noisy neighbors. When my husband and I were newlyweds we broke the lease on our first apartment because the weekend parties were RIDICULOUS in the apartment complex where we lived. We wrote numerous letters to the landlord documenting the dates & times when tenants broke the noise ordinance, we left the apartment spic and span, paid the rent up until the day we moved out, and never heard from the landlord again. If it's as bad as you say (and I don't doubt that it is) maybe you could find a quieter place to live? Check out your lease & see if there are quiet hours listed there, and document every time your neighbors violate them. Call the police when they are violating the noise ordinance in your town (look that up first obviously). Then you'll be in a good position to break your lease (if you have one) without having to pay after you move out.

    i live next to a bar and it gets loud, not the music but the drunks that go outside to smoke. i bought headphones (the kind you wear to the gun range) and they work great. i also downloaded an app “white noise” which plays different sounds. i need it to be either really quiet or really loud
