Speed in answering MCQ's in Practice

I have 14 days till my next stab at FAR, and there are even areas of the videos that I haven’t covered. I have decided just to work countless MCQ’s until test day.

In practice, how fast should we allow ourselves to answer the MCQs? If the problem has some minor math to it, should I even allow myself to go beyond the average 1.5 minutes per question one needs to tr and answer it?

I know that, in order for this information to stick better, at least an attempt must be made. But how long should one take in making that attempt?

    Thanks.

When I took FAR, I made sure that I mastered the conceptual questions and answered them in .5 seconds rather than the usual 1.5s, that way I had more time to spend on the math intensive problems. I ended up with extra time to spend on the SIMs by adjusting the time I spent on MCQs as well.

Also, try to limit the amount of time you spend second guessing yourself and ALWAYS read the question stem of mathematical problems first, that way you are able to knock some options out of the answer choices and are also able to pick up variables in the problem that you need to complete the problem rather than spending time with all of the extra “fluff”.

    Hope that helps! Good luck!

Spend as much time as you need to understand the question and take notes if it is wrong. During you final week of prep, do a exam mode test to see if you can answer the questions quickly enough

    |FAR| - 72, 83
    |AUD| - 73, 76
    |REG| - 76
    |BEC| - 73, 82

    ALL DONE!!

Time budget is also important in taking the test, especially FAR. I budgeted 45-45-60-90 when I took the test. So that means the 1st and 2nd testlets you have to average 1.5 minutes per question. You can budget 45 minutes on the 3rd but if it gets harder than the 1st 2 then extending it to an hour is fine. 1.5 hours budget for SIMs is enough, I finished SIMS in an hour but I still used the remaining 30 minutes to review, which I'm glad I did because I missed 2 zeros on one of my answers.

The first thing I did was write down the following on my note board 3:15, 2:30, 1:30. So when I see that the timer is getting close to those numbers, that means it's time to finish up the test. Of course you have to consider your break time when you plan your time. You are graded by the correct answers not how fast you finished the test so use it wisely. Good luck!

Similar to klmc, I take time to understand them as I go, rather than pounding through as many as possible and reinforcing some wrong answers. I never guess– I look in the book and the testbank resources to make sure I understand it, and I rework the calculations by hand if necessary. I tend to emphasize quality rather than quantity in my prep.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

I do the questions online, and turn off the timer. This lets you think about the question and try to understand it, rather than worrying about time. As for the people saying they want to understand every question and never guess, then perhaps that works for them, but there are a decent amount of questions that I guess on – I just be sure to mark them. Some of the questions you still might not understand after reading the answer. Then just move on instead of wasting time figuring out a couple of really hard Becker Q's that in all reality will not be on the exam.

I take my time also… I've never taken a practice exam (unless you count the UNA exams). I prefer to know right then if I got it right or wrong and why. I go REALLY slow. I take notes, sometimes even on the ones I got right if I feel like it was just a lucky guess and I was missing some part of the concept.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.
