So Close Yet So FAR

Hey everyone! I need some advice. So I have passed both BEC and AUD but started studying for FAR and it’s terrifying me. With BEC and AUD, if I didn’t understand something, it’d take a few multiple choice questions and I’d feel fairly prepared. With FAR, it takes me hours to feel confident about certain topics. So that being said, here are the tools I have at my disposal:

Becker – Firm paid for but didn’t touch much for BEC or AUD due to using Wiley for school
Wiley Course and WTB – have to complete the course using this program due to grad school credit
    Ninja Flashcards

My question is, is it normal to feel this freaked out starting to study for FAR? I was nervous about BEC and AUD but by no means this terrified. Also any thoughts on Becker vs Wiley for FAR? Any suggestions on FAR would be greatly appreciated. Oh also I take FAR on April 17th, so I have some time.

    Thanks y’all!

I just took FAR today so you can take this advice with a grain of salt… I too passed AUD/BEC then moved on to FAR and felt very overwhelmed while studying but it all clicked in review. I used Becker, the best advice I can give you is go through all the material once, don't focus too much on nailing every topic, just get your feet wet then move on to the next section. Take notes while watching the lectures. By the time I made it to chapter 10 I couldn't tell you a single thing from chapter 1-5. Then I reviewed my notes for 2 weeks while hammering NINJA MCQ leading up to the exam.

The FAR sims are tough but I didn't see any MCQ that I wasn't familiar with (well prepared)

Good luck- the first run through the FAR material is the worst

Yes indeed, first run thru FAR is worst for many of us. Even though I didn't pass, I will say that the MCQ were not hard. I did better on the SIMs for sure, but it was the MCQ that killed me (but should not have.) What you absolutely have to focus on, and i've said this in earlier replies to people, is Government, Nonprofit, and IFRS. They think everyone is going to come in expecting a bunch of questions on leases, bonds, accrual vs. cash, and basic principles, and…surprise!!! They ask like 1 question on each of those areas and ask like TWENTY-FIVE questions on Government.

Other advice – review all your MCQ at least twice. That will help you.

@tvpaul, I totally agree with what @Beantown23 said. FAR seems very overwhelming in the beginning! Don't stress out too much while you are going through the material. It's true, you will not remember much of anything by the time you get to the last Chapter. The key with FAR is to give yourself AT LEAST 2 weeks for review. This is when everything starts coming together and things that seemed confusing in the beginning start to make sense. Review, do MCQs and don't skip SIMs. I've missed out on at least a week of review due to the timing of the exam. I wish I could go back and not spend so much time on those chapters during my initial study, I wouldn't be so worried about my score like I am now.

    Good luck!

Thanks @beantown23 that makes me feel a lot better. That was the approach I used for BEC and AUD but I was scared that it would take too long for it to click during my review. Speaking of review though, how do you go about reviewing? I've budgeted 10 days for review and plan on just hammering MCQs but not sure if I should try to resolve all of the questions or focus on certain topics.

@crazyleon wow okay definitely noted. I had always thought those topics weren't that important so definitely good to know. Hopefully those topics don't take too long to click

    @Namstut
would 10 days of review be sufficient? I do not work right now so I'll be studying full time. I just don't know how to play for my review based on how long these topics are taking me now. Hoping the speed picks up

@tvpaul, 10 days should be enough if you don't work. I work 60+ hours a week, plus from home and weekends so work was cutting into my study and review time.

Remember my words, once you go through a few sets of review MCQs after you finish all chapters you will be able to zoom in on the areas that need improvement. It's like peeling the onion! And yes, there might be some tears once you get closer to the end. 🙂

@tvpaul for my review I just re-read the notes I took during the lectures before I hit the MCQ. If you don't take notes I would buy ninja notes. Once I was up to speed on all the material I hit about 700 ninja mcq and that really set the concepts in stone for me. My exam today felt way too easy, I hope its because I was prepare lol. the questions got more wordy but difficulty was hard to guage

I feel the same way. There is just so much material. I'm half way through and don't think my brain can absorb anymore! I will take the advice here and give myself two weeks for review.

The difficulty with FAR is the volume of information you must recall. Then you get to the exam and maybe 1% is tested.

There is a pervasive myth that FAR is hard. It isn't. The questions in Becker are about as difficult as you'll see on the exam..usually. Doesn't mean there cant be a brutal question, an Accounting sadist like my old intermediate professor would write.
