Simulations – assignment and scoring (empircial knowledge/thoughts welcome!)

So I went back and tried to find a thread relating to a couple thoughts/questions I had…

1.) Anyone know how sims are assigned to a candidate? I know that they aren’t adaptive and in theory don’t even consider your performance on MCQ. But with the MASSIVE disparity I’ve witness taking the same exam, I simply cannot understand how they are all -in theory- worth the same amount of points. Maybe theyre each assigned a difficulty level and the sum of each sim is supposed to amount to a certain number, or range of numbers??

2.) I read a while back that you should never change what you believe to be a correct answer in attempt to make the “big picture” work (obvious example would be a journal entry line item with a calculated amount). So here’s my question…what if you stuck to your guns on a couple line items, but couldnt force the entry to balance…are you dinged BIG TIME because in the eyes of the examiners…”this idiot can’t balance an entry??”

    To answer your question 1:

    https://www.aicpa.org/BecomeACPA/CPAExam/PsychometricsandScoring/ScoringInformation/DownloadableDocuments/How_the_CPA_Exam_is_Scored.pdf

The SIMS are pre-assigned and not adaptive, and they are not effected by your MCQ. These are facts, not theory.

Unsure about #2, just do your best 🙂

    REG - 68 | 71 | 88 | 86
    FAR - 72 | 74 | 79
    AUD - 66 | 70 | 77
    BEC - 62 | 74 | 80

    Guess that means I'm a soon-to-be CPA!

I am aware that the AICPA describes the process on their website, and you've intrepreted them to be facts. The AICPA also releases scores that are “fact”…we all know how true that is for some in 2010 and 2011.

Besides…that wasnt the essence of my question, which was HOW are they pre-selected, and what consideration and weight is given in pre-selecting them. This may be a question we'll just never have an answer to.

Nobody, i mean Nobody will ever be able to answer that HOW questions for you. It will be all guesswork and speculation.

So you are right, we will never have a answer to. Just do your best on simulations.
